I admit I've been sucked into the Paris Jail Vortex. It astonishes me that, like a train wreck, I can't look away. I think my issue is that I want there to be some kind of justice in the world (legal or karmic) so that Hilton must face the consequences of her behavior -- and I'm not just talking about the DUI/suspended license behavior. She sounds like an imbecile -- and here's someone who's had every opportunity to make something of herself and contribute to society and she's chosen -- this?
Is she being unfairly treated? I don't know. As MacK said she broke the law, agreed to the sentence, then TWICE was stopped doing exactly what she had promised she wouldn't do. Sister needs someone to give her some boundaries. Apparently her parents aren't capable.
Which brings me to Paris's parents. What a couple of enabling idiots those two are. Had I made of sex video that was widely distributed, flashed my privates, or for that matter, had I driven while drunk, I doubt my parents would continue to finance, nay DEFEND, my lifestyle. But then, I'm just a middle class schlub.
Being rich is a hard karma, and it's reassuring that we have to pay, one way or the other. Paris can be shielded from a lot of unpleasant things, but apparently she can't be shielded from herself. Hope she grows up, then maybe she'll take herself out of the limelight (this will probably happen when GWB admits he's been the worst president ever.)
I don't think we should assume LW has an MSW or is a licensed clinical something-or-other. He could have been part of an organization that does peer-to-peer counseling. I think LW leaves the question open which suggests, to me, that perhaps this isn't an ethical question letter as much as a moral one. Should LW disclose damaging information about a co-worker that he obtained in a way the prohibits him disclosing the information?
I think Cary's answer was perfect. However, if co-worker is as messed up as LW implies, I think, as others have said, he should watch his back. Co-worker would have no qualms about throwing LW under a bus.
Good luck LW. It's a difficult situation. In my line of work I would be conflicted because we deal with lots of confidential information about people and companies that could be very damaging if disclosed. I would worry about the company's clients and the trustworthiness of co-worker.
I think consulting an attorney is a great idea.
I'm probably going against the grain, but HH (Holly Hunter, not Heather Havrilesky) has always annoyed me (yes, even in the Piano) -- she overacts and this "I'm bad but really good and God is giving me a second chance because s/he sees my goodness" thing is just a frackin' annoying catchy thing that's been done in a bunch of other Hen & Bunny episodes.
I love Lily Taylor and didn't hate her new show and I'll probably watch both HH and LT (and GC though haven't seen her show yet) a couple more times but if HH doesn't stop the histrionics I'm done (although I do love what's-his-name Lemansky which may keep me watching HH's show).
Sigh. And BTW, HH (Heather) rawks rocks or whatever the whippersnappers say these days.
I find Gervais' work simultaneously brilliant and cringeworthy. His season (series?) finale was excruciating.
Part of the success of the Gawker/TMZ/gossips sites is that they are superb time-wasters at work. Have to participate in a boring telephone conference? Surf the internet while everyone else talking. Need to take break (but can't leave your desk?) Jezebel is there for you.
I can't imagine how much productivity is lost at work by people who are surfing gawker sites.
I've been watching since the beginning and I'm beginning to hate all the characters (except Gina) so much that I can't watch every night -- it's too intense. I'm trying the weekend reruns to see if that works better.
I have been in therapy and this is probably the best example (in a nut shell) of what therapy is like. The acting is absolutely superb, the writing is amazing. I've always like Byrne, and I can't imagine anyone else playing Paul. Weist is a revelation. Everyone in the cast is outstanding.
Also, I've become obsessed with the wave machine which seems to be in every shot of the patients (and I think is suggested in the opening credits). Where does one get one of those things?
I hope this gets lots of interest. Such a sweet and funny show. It does take a bit of warming up to, but all the goofy characters (and everyone's tolerance of the other) is so British. Love Dawn French.
The blog of unnecessary quotation marks made me laugh out loud at 6 a.m.. Great way to start the day!
Also, Luca Turin is the subject of a wonderful book called "The Emperor of Scent" by Chandler Burr. Burr goes in to great deal about Turin's abilities and I've been waiting for years for a book like this latest to come out. I can't wait to get started.
I was only an occasional watcher of South Park until I saw the Cesar Milan episode which makes me laugh every time I see it. I have found entire season this year to be clever and wonderful (I think one of my favorites is the "are you sure?" "I'm not just sure, I'm HIV positive" episode. I've got everyone at work saying it. "Are you sure this needs to go out today?" "I'm not just sure . . .") The biting satire is perfect. Every episode has some great take away and I don't care about the politics or "agenda" -- it's a great (and occasionally horrifying) look at who we are.
