I have loved...

Bruce Springsteen since Born in the USA. I didn't see the interview, but after reading the transcript, I've never been prouder to be a fan than at the moment he let Soledad have it right between the eyes.

When she asks if he isn't afraid of alienting his audience I thought,"Um, apparently you're not too familiar with his fan base." All the Springsteen fans I know are fans because of his wonderful music AND the fact that he never shrinks from speaking his mind. And he always does it in clear, matter-of-fact language so he can't be misinterpreted.

How sad is it that we do have to rely on the Springsteens, Stewarts, and Colberts to speak their minds and try to wake up the rest of the country to what's going on. But I'm immensely grateful they do speak up!!

I'd like to issue a warning...

I lived in Ukraine for two years. I knew some of the women who were hoping to be mail order brides. To them it was a business exchange. The man would get his "dream wife" and they would live in the West and have oodles of money and everything that comes with it. The problem would come when their dream went sour.

Their women are tough. They have to be to live there. Life for them is hard. Food shopping alone is a second job. They go to horrible hospitals alone to give birth to children without anesthesia unless they have the money to pay for it. As a result of their living conditions they may look and act on the surface like kittens. But, they are actually full grown cats with very sharp claws. The claws stay hidden until the vows are said. I saw it for myself. During the time I was over there I attended three weddings and saw the same thing happen every time. Three women all giggly and sweet to their boyfriends turned into shrews right after the wedding. And I mean RIGHT AFTER.

It's impossible for me to completely describe the nuances of what I experienced. I realize I may sound like a bitter Western woman. If that's how you want to take it so be it. I just hope you'll at least consider what I've said. I realize relationships are tough over here. Guess what, they're tough every where. Marrying someone who probably doesn't speak your language, including understanding it's subtle undertones, and who sees you as nothing more than an escape hatch is no solution.

AMEN

I agree non-agorophobe. Who would want to hang out with any of you? Your dog is

your best company!? I have a dog too & he's a great dog but HE'S A DOG! Don't

get me wrong I'm not some social butterfly. I spend a lot of time on my own too and

I'm fine with it, to a point. What ever happened to the fine art of conversation?

Being alone for too long makes a person boring, very boring. So get out and talk to

some people life is too short, get out and have some fun, stop thinking so damn

much!!

Get over it

Maybe it's because I work very hard to stay in shape, but I enjoy it when I see a man "checking me out". It's a compliment. I don't think that young girls should be wearing sexy costumes at Halloween or any other time, that's downright disturbing. But anyone over 18 who has the self confidence to wear a sexy outfit for Halloween should just go for it.

And since when did feminism become a license to hate men. I am an ardent feminist. But I also know that men are great. Yes, they can be a total pain in the a@@. But so can women -- and I think a lot more often than men.

Original article: The upside of terror

Everytime I think

about the not-so-gradual incursion on our rights by this administration and how most Americans stay silent, some are even happy. They convince themselves it's in their best interests. The government is protecting them from terrorists. I think of the poem that starts:

When the Nazis came for the communists

I remained silent

After all I was not a communist...

Thank you Garrison for reminding us all that it's not the terrorists we should be concerned about, but those who swear they are protecting us.

As Ben Franklin said:

Those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither.

The ex-Beatle had to be McCartney

John & George both left widows they had been married to for over 20 years each. Ringo has been married to Barbara Bach for about 20 years. El Tigre said it was a recent ex who would diminish his standing. He must mean Heather Mills the soon to be ex of Paul.

Go home now

I was in the Peace Corps. During training they told

us if we were thinking of leaving we should try and

give it six months. If after that time we still wanted

to go we should leave. The first few months were hell

for me and I wanted to leave everyday. But after about

four months I started to adapt. At the end of the

first year I loved it and not only stayed the full two

years, but added a couple extra months.

You have given it 7 months and still hate it. It

doesn't sound like the situation will improve,

but will actually get worse. Do yourself and the

people of your host country a favor. You're not

fooling any of them they know why you're there

and how you really feel, so leave.

I started to think

I was reading People magazine, not Salon. Enough about his physical characteristics andhow he messed up when he was young and inexperienced--who didn't? How about concentrating

on his stands on the important issues--you know the stuff that really matters in an election. The writer sounded like a jealous teenager.

By vetoing the bill

Bush signed the death warrant for more Marines to die. But I guess signing death warrants is kind of his personal specialty.

FYI

It was Henny Youngman, not Rodney Dangerfield, who said "Take my wife...please!"
