Balance is the key

This is a very timely subject with so many obese kids today. I am a registered dietitian with 2 children. Do my kids eat perfectly? No. Do they understand that some foods are healthier than others and that all foods can fit into a healthy diet plan? I'd like to think so, but we'll have to wait a few years to know for sure. A quote I have always remembered and share often with my clients came from a conference I attended years ago. It is the philosophy of Ellyn Satter (a dietitian and social worker). She states that it is the parent's job to supply a well rounded diet. It is the child's job to eat it, or not. That's right, no short order cooking or substitutions. Kids won't starve to death with a missed meal or two. Her books provide much more detail and are well worth reading. The long term benefit of this appoach is a tolerance for most foods and the elimination of meal time as a battle ground. Balanced nutrition and a healthy attitude regarding all foods is vital. Many people I see don't get the direct relationship between food and health. We will do our kids a great service if we help them see that (in a non-threatening way, of course). BTW did you know that 6 out of the top 10 causes of death in our country are diet and lifestyle related?

I have always wondered...

why Bush, a devout Christian, is so willing to use profanity. Profanity is not common in the general Christian community, (at least in mine).

Breakfast should be protein and complex carb

Which can be almost anything, including SOME cereals. If you want a cereal look for one that has at least 5 grams each of protein and fiber (complex carb) and whatever other requirements you have for yourself. The protein and fiber help prevent premature hunger.

There are lots of choices out there. As a dietitian, I often recommend the Kashi cereals mentioned above.

The granolas I have looked at generally don't meet my criteria because they are so high in calories.

Or experiment for breakfast. This morning I had fat free refried beans with brown rice and salsa.

Professor

Lose the granola bar (unless it's one higher in fiber and protein). It's kind of like healthy sounding junk food. HOW MUCH you are eating is also important. Might or might not explain hunger. I just read about a study where people who ate 2 boiled eggs daily were satisfied till lunch, lost weight and didn't increase cholesterol (because they ate less junk later on). Not that I would recommend that (yet), but interesting.

I'm sorry

Where are the parents of these girls? If my daughter had type 1 diabetes I would be aware of her blood sugars on a daily basis and take action accordingly! It may be that they are part of the problem as is often the case with mainstream eating disorders.

Regarding the above letter and Byetta...I am a dietitian in a physician's office and encourage the doctors to use Byetta on appropriate patients. Studies show it also may even help promote a modest weight loss.

Original article: The GOP's loyalty oath

I am not registered with any party

and I live in Georgia. On primary day I walk up to the table and tell them which party's ballot I want. I do not have to prove party affiliation. I usually use this opportunity to vote against the worst Republican.

Annonymous is right

The people he is reaching out to DO care about his Mormonism. I have had conversations with them. Mormonism is very unpopular within much of the evangelical Christian world. He HAS to give this speech to reach that portion of the base. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Sure

they'll vote for him over a Democrat in the general. He has to get there first. I think a lot of evangelicals are going to like that Baptist minister candidate in the primary.

@cythera45

I can't speak for all Obama supporters, but I can speak for myself. This white 45 yo female who has never missed voting in an election will not vote for HRC. Ever. I watched the SC debate with the mindset of trying to listen to her objectively with the intent of maybe being able to vote for her if need be. I came away from that with my negative opinion solidified. Yes, I know that HRC supporters feel the same about Obama's performance. I think all that debate did was to make everyone sure that their candidate is "the one". I am an independant from Georgia and Obama will get my primary vote on Feb. 5.

@DLF

It could be that they are counting primaries, not caucuses. That's all I could come up with when I noticed this.
