Original article: A debate for sobering times

I disagree

Judging by the poll numbers - which I can assure you the McCain campaign is taking seriously, even if you aren't - McCain and Palin's mud slinging is doing them more harm than Obama. All Obama, and by extension the rest of the Ds have to do is stay out of the way. Let Obama stay the picture of calm reassurance; McCain and Palin will disintegrate into a fury of spitting froth all by themselves, along with the 25% of the population who still support the madness of the last eight years.

This one's in the bag.

vote fraud

Eight years out from a bloodless coup, and still occupied by a grossly incompetent and illegal corporate fascist regime, it's a little ridiculous for people who have supported this treason to complain about "voter fraud."

Voter fraud is the five "justices" on the Supreme Court who ruled in favor of the current occupant in Bush v. Gore in December of '08. Every allegation of voter fraud after that is moot. This country must be taken back from these poisonous, treasonous kleptocrats... by any means necessary.

oops....

it's been a long eight years.

further evidence

That the Republican Party, as it now exists, is a domestic terrorist organization bent on the destruction of this country. They should be treated just like the National Socialist Party was in Germany after WWII.

Let's just go ahead and finish the civil war right here and now. Let them have Texas and Oklahoma.

@ Brian

What you're saying is that there is moral equivalency between the people at these increasingly threatening rallies calling Obama a terrorist, shouting out "kill him" and spreading any filthy lie they can make up, all of it encouraged by McCain and Palin, and actual criticism of the policies of the Republican party for the last eight years, and McCain's support of those policies. With the exception of cherry picked occasional outliers on obscure websites you aren't seeing that from the progressive side of this debate. Sure, Sarah comes in for ridicule - I would say rightfully so - in particular since for the most part it's her own verbatim words being used to mock her.

But to fall back to the tired and completely dishonest "they ALL do it" rubric is not just deceitful, it's outright crazy.

There's no moral equivalence between Tina Fey and "Kill Him"....

personally...

I hope the Democrats do EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING they need to INSURE total and complete victory over the Insane Corporate Fascist Party. I could care less how dirty they have to get; how many votes they have to "steal"... anything... bring on the pitchforks and torches as far as I'm concerned.

There's a lot of things about the Democrats that I don't like or support, but the sole determinate as far as I'm concerned this time is that they're NOT REPUBLICANS.

Eyes on the prize.

And if you get caught, just ignore the subpoena and claim "executive privilege".

I guess the base will cheer

What's (spit) Bush's approval rating down to now? 25%? Or has it dropped even lower?

These are the people that McCain and Palin are trying to appeal to. Their behavior is being rejected by more and more people every day, and still they persist. That's ok with me. Keep doing what you're doing John. Sink your party so far that they'll forever be reduced to a minor annoyance.

Republicans have PROVEN once and for all that they're unfit and unable to govern this country.

$50 and beer

I've supported myself for over four decades as a musician. In the mid sixties the $50 a night afforded me a brand new Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, an apartment, and a well stocked larder.

That $50 barely pays for gas to the next gig now.

But... the beer's a lot better than it was then.

As long as there's a bar to play in, beer to drink, and another plastic basket of artery clogging fried food I'll be ok. Just don't forget the gratuity... and remember Uncle Mike's adage: If it doesn't fold, it's not a tip.

thank you and good night.

The test

The first test of whether Obama is the man I hope him to be will be how he handles the the policy of the unitary executive in general, and Bush's outright rejection of the balance of powers in particular. I would like to see him unequivocally renounce the abuses of signing statements; either curtailing them, or refusing to use this tactic entirely. He also needs to issue orders dramatically breaking with the lawlessness of the last eight years, and insist that HIS administration will FOLLOW THE LAW in both spirit and letter.

To be as powerful as he'll need to be he needs to repudiate the illegitimate abuse of power that is the one true "legacy" of the current fraud.

When it comes to money

It appears that savvy investors don't need a Weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

I guess McCain's handlers never heard or understood the song that Ayers, et. al. took their name from.

good point

MAV....

I think the story of the ineptitude of McCain's hither and yon campaign masks a truly brilliant Obama campaign. They picked a good strategy - going against conventional wisdom by appealing to the intelligence of the American people. And they've stuck to that message for the most part; doing so without being reticent to quickly answer charges from the Republicans and their surrogates.

Not only that, but Obama's background as a community organizer clearly had an influence on the determined and effective grassroots organizations they've built up. Howard Dean has taken a lot of heat from some quarters about his "50 state strategy" - an organizational model that the Obama campaign has fully embraced and implemented. But it's worked amazingly well. All one has to do is look at the McCain campaign's frantic efforts to just hang on to states that would NEVER have been battlegrounds in anyone's estimation when this thing started.

As a liberal Democrat I'm overjoyed. As an American I'm relieved.
