  • I'm liking Obama less and less

He seems to be running the dirtiest Democratic campaign in recent history and inflaming racial tension in the process. I never expected this campaign to be free of racial and gender overtones - that would be ridiculous. But I didn't expect the campaigns to be the ones fanning the flames. I feel like I'm being held hostage to racial sensititiy - I don't want to be insensitive, but I do NOT approve of the way I see Obama's campaign turning every issue into "race". For example, the only way to turn Bill Clinton's "fairytale" comment into a racial attack was to take it completely out of context. And when did cocaine become a black issue? Does anybody else believe that the implication that cocaine use is a racial issue is truly racist? And since when was it racist to comment unfavorably on past indiscretions by your opponent? The attitude of the Obama campaign seems to be that since Obama is black, then any attack on him is a racial attack. This does not reflect well on him, or his campaign, and this kind of slash and burn campaign does not bode well for the Democratic Party's liklihood of success at winning the Presidency.

I was pleased when Obama said he was running for President. I'm not a huge Clinton fan, and I liked his style. Now, I just wish he would go away.

    1) Given that Johnson referred to what Obama mentioned in his book, I assume that he was referring to drug use, not selling drugs. 2) Clinton did not say that Johnson was referring to "community organizing", Johnson did. 3) I'm not judging Obama's drug use. I don't particularly care if he used drugs. But it is a legitimate campaign issue (a lot of people care very much about drug use) and it has nothing to do with race, unless one makes the very racist (and totally inaccurate) assumption that only black people do drugs in high school.

  • Damn the media

They need to sell ad space (television and newspaper), so instead of telling stories about things that are relevant to people they take the easier (if more divisive) route of creating controversy to get people to pay attention. I blame them for the Bush years, for the ignorance of the American people about world events, and for the current battles between Clinton and Obama supporters. This started out as a wonderful year for the Democratic Party - but it's quickly turning into an embarrassment for America.

  • This is not good

If we had competent leadership, things would never have come to this. I've been hoping that the crash would hold off until we get a new President, but that doesn't seem likely. These guys will do what they have always done - use the financial challenges of the nation to feather the nests of their cronies. Well, we have to live with it. We've had recessions before. Let's hope that things don't get too bad.

Question: Would you put is past Bush to increase the severity of the recession so that it lasts well into he next administration, giving the Republicans a chance to regain power after a 1-term Democratic presidenty? Is that thought way too cynical? No, probably not. I believe that the current administration is lying when they say they weren't aware of the implications of the housing/credit bubble. I was aware of it years ago, and I'm not even an economist. I think they fed the bubble, even knowing it would lead to a major crash, because it artifically increased prosperity and allowed them to continue their wanton spending habits under the pretense that their tax cuts had effectively stimulated the economy. How's that for cynicism?

  • Sometimes we need ages on our sigs

I'm betting that anybody over 40 is cheering for the wife, while everybody under 30 is solidly in the kid's camp.

  • I think we need a counter t-shirt

I really like the elephant anus idea. We need another t-shirt. The same image, but with elephant ears and perhaps a trunk peeking out from the front. The logo would be "Republicans United Not Thinking", and there could be a big pile of, er, elephant dung strategically placed in the text.

  • Could you go back to reassurance next week?

I've actually started to not completely hate flying since I started reading your column. I still hate being squeezed like a herring, and don't even get me started on airline security! But... I no longer fear turbulence. I can enjoy taking off and landing, like I used to when I was a kid. I'm not terrified to fly in snow. Flying is not frightening, just uncomfortable. Thanks for that. Now... could you please go back to being reassuring and informative instead of scary and informative? Thanks.

  • I'm actually beginning to like her

During the last 2 elections I've loved the candidates, but suffered as they silently let the right-wing walk all over them. Clinton is a fighter. I remember now why I named my cat after her. We picked up a stray cat, and brought it into the house to see if it could handle our three dogs. The cat sat in the middle of the sniffing, curious, large dogs and didn't flinch, or run and hide, or cower, or claw them - she wasn't afraid of the dogs. At the time, Hillary Clinton was being attacked by the media, and behaving much the same way. Thus, our cat was annointed "Hillary". I can't say she was a great cat, but I always admired her attitude - she never did back down when the dogs bothered her, and eventually the dogs stopped bothering her, for the most part.
