It's not brain surgery

Just reassure your boss that you really like working with her and that you're not angling for her job. Admit that someday you would like to be promoted, and you believe that the best way to do that is for both of you to rise in the company, and you make that more likely by working with her, the more experienced person. Your old boss was incompetent, and it was understandable that the higher ups would want you to replace him. This boss, based on your description, is quite competent and you can benefity by working with her. So do it and don't worry if you do some things better than her. If you play it right, you might end up being promoted past her, and that's okay, but it will be easier on her and you if you can help her to look better with the company so that she has a chance to rise, too.

Oh... and if the CEO calls you again...

If you know the answer, answer. If you need to go to yous boss, do so and then let her call the CEO back with the answer. If you are really getting the information from her and then giving it to the CEO, then it looks as if you're trying to take credit for her work. Remember - company politics is complicated. Her higher ups will remember if they feel as if you're "stabbing her in the back". They won't mind if you get promoted fairly, but she will probably be around when you do, and she will be an enemy if she feels that you took advantage of her knowledge for your own gain. And the people above you will know about it.

I can't feel sorry for anybody in this story

The investors got what they deserved - they took high risk loans and they lost big. The woman who is about to lose her home should lose it, and she should be required to pay the difference between it's value and what she owes. She can start by selling her Lexus. That really annoys me. I would love to own a Lexus, but I can't afford one. I drive a very basic 6 year old Camry, and it's a great car. Not a Lexus, though. She conned the bank - lied on legal documents. They all deserve to lose.

Does it matter?

Regardless of who is at fault, the only way to get our of poverty is to work your ass off. Heck, even then you probably won't get out, but your kids might. And if they work their asses off, their kids might be better off yet. Sometimes we get distracted by who has done what and forget to focus on how to get out. The upper clases can help, but each individual has to do it themselves.

"There is no evidence that Obama was or is a Muslim"

That's all they need to write, somewhere high in the article. If they really want to illuminate the facts, they could then talk to a couple of experts on the Muslim religion and perhaps a few people who are children of Muslims but do not share their parents religion. It could actually end up being an elightening article about what it means to be a Muslim.

I suspect that they are thinking that the charges are not serious enough to even look at - but that's wrong. By passing on the charges without critiquing them, the newspaper is giving the charges credibility. Kerry didn't go wrong by not criticizing the swift boaters, he wrong wrong by not attacking the media for passing on their lies without analysis. The swift boaters should have been ignored, by Kerry if no by the media. But when the media started reporting their lies the campaign had to respond. How Obama's campaign deals with this article will tell us a lot about how successful he could be in a full on presidential campaign. If he lets it go, then he's going to lose just like Kerry did. If he successfully fights it, then he might have a chance.

Original article: Is RU-486 a murder weapon?

Human Foetuses Are Human

That is not and has never been in dispute. My fingernails are human, as is every cell in my body. The question is whether they are "persons" who have rights, or are simply non-sentient parts of the woman's body until they grow enough to achieve personhood.

Personally, I think that anybody who doesn't believe that this prosecution undermines abortioh rights is wrong. The woman doesn't get to define if what she carries is or is not a person with rights. The courts define that, and if they decide that kiling an early foetus is murder then there is no way that there can be a difference between a woman making that choice or somebody making it for her.

Original article: A rose is a rose is a rose

I think it's perfect

I actually felt a bit revolted seeing the red rose sewn shut. It's a very good visual reminder of the blood as well as a symbolic reminder that the women who are mutilated in this way will never be able to "flower into full womanhood". The pink rose made me think of the children who are never going to enjoy the pleasures of being a woman. All in all, this is a very effective technique of promoting this issue. Fighting genital mutilation is going to take a campaign as intense as the fight for an end to apartheid in South Africa. We need more than just words. These images are powerful.

This is the problem with capitalism

Some people get so focused on the money that they forget that it's just a means to an end, not the end itself. When the goal becomes making money instead of providing a service or product, then something gets lost. Generally, the service or product, to start with. But things have gotten so complex that nobody can even keep track of the money anymore. How many Enron's are out there? How many companies exist that are really just empty shells that funnel money to greedy investors? And what does it mean for the rest of us when these corporations are exposed as the empty shells that they are?
