So who has really betrayed the soldiers fighting for us in Iraq? Pelosi, or the Republican dominated congress that sent them off to fight without adequate numbers, armour, or training. Who betrayed this country into going to war in the first place? Reid, or the administration that conflated "terrorism" and "Hussein" until people were so confused that they were willing to accept this travesty as part of the "War on Terror"? For that matter... who told voters that he was going to run for office as the Republican candidate, then betrayed his contributors and constituents by trying to get out of the race as soon as he won the primary? Hint: It wasn't Reid or Pelosi.
Okay, "betrayal of trust" isn't all there is to treason, but if it were, DeLay and this administration would be the most treasonous in U.S. history.
1) Having a baby while you're young reduces your chance of getting breast cancer.
2) Most teenagers who are pregnant terminate their pregnancies through abortion rather than giving birth.
Therefore... abortion is increasing the rate of breast cancer in women by allowing them to not have babies while they are young. The logic is impeccable. Twisted, but impeccable. I suppose that the next step to reducing breast cancer (after banning abortion) should be requiring all women to have babies while they are teenagers, or at least very young women.
The goal of al-quaeda on 9/11 was to incite the U.S. to retaliate, or, even better, to overreact, thereby increasing anti-U.S. sentiment throughout the Muslim world and increasing the power of terrorist groups. Because of this administration's insularity and complete lack of understanding of world politics, they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Iraq is a wonderful recruiting/training ground for terrorists, terrorist attacks are up worldwide, and we are hated in the Muslim world as never before.
So, what happens next? If Democrats win the White House, we will probably end the war in Iraq and start taking a more reasonable approach to political discourse with Muslim nations. This will not make terrorists happy. If the U.S. is seen as "reasonable", they are weakened. Their likely response will be to attack us again in order to force us to repeat the excesses of Iraq. Of course, even if the Republican overreactors stay in power, eventually the terrorists will gain enough power to attack the U.S. hard again. One way or another, we will be attacked again. Continuing to give the terrorists what they want is a delaying strategy that will only make the problem worse in the long run. But, in the Republican political mind, all they have to do is to keep the terrorists from attacking the U.S. again on their watch. If the terrorists attack during a Democratic presidency, the pundits who are so forgiving of Bush's inattention before 9/11 will suddenly pounce, blaming every death on the current (Democratic) occupant of the White House. If the timing is right, this could sweep the Republicans back into the White House and complete control of Congress.
Orwell must be turning over in his grave. I'm not sure if Bush has ever read "1984", but I'm certain that Rove keeps a well-thumbed copy on his nightstand. Orwell must be turning over in his grave. His work was meant to be a warning - not an instruction manual.
Pat Tillman's death was not "shameful" in any way. The military could have used his death to educate the public about the realities of the dangers of "friendly fire" deaths or injuries and to show what they have been doing to prevent these kinds of deaths. The war in Afghanistan was, and is, supported by most Americans. We wouldn't have turned simply because one person died tragically. Does it really matter how someone dies while they are serving their country? Do the "friendly fire" deaths count less than the "enemy fire" deaths. What about people who die in accidents while serving in a war zone?
This administration has fostered an atmosphere where lies are the norm. They lie even when they don't have to, when there is nothing sinister to cover up. They lie simply to make a better story, even when they don't have to.
My husband and I recorded it, since it was on 10:00-11:30 in our area and we have to get up early for work. We made the mistake of watching the first few minutes, and ended up staying up until the end of the show. It was like a wake-up call. I knew all of the details, but seeing it laid out in front of me, neatly packaged, was shocking. Combine this with Rahm Emmanuels speech at the Brookings institute (http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2007/apr/25/heres_rahms_full_speech) and you will get a full picture of how the Republican party manipulated this country into a series of disaters with the help of a compliant press.
As a nation, we are well on our way to losing our status as a world superpower. Our national infrastructure is weakened by years of neglect. Our people are terrified of losing their jobs to outsourcing or illegal immigrants, or of losing their lives to terroists. Our unbiased media has been cowed into submission by well-organized attacks from advocates in the right-wing media corporations. We are trapped in a war with no measurable targets for success. This isn't an accident. This is not a result of incompetence. It is the the logical result of the Republican Party/Neoconservative philosophy. And the only way out of this mess is for the media to show the American people that they(we) have been duped by a bunch of con artists into working against our own interests and against the best interests of our country.
