walter -

just travel back in time five month and look at the numbers

the Dem candidates - any candidate was getting against a Republican - any Republican - and then look at the numbers right now. Sure "polls are fiction" but my mother in law is

as "real" as it gets. Five month ago she thought the Republicans were "toast" - "in the dumpster" - "finished"

and then she watched with a growing enjoyment the good show Hillary and Obama put on. Remember the "Hillaryhopenumber"

in the yellow dress - that's her favorite but she also liked Obama with the "towel head" - and when one week agao - the first time - some poll predicted, that Obama came down by 8 points against McCain she gave a party for some of her friends

and for fun they served "Dems on toast".

dolores -

- I am dreaming that one day the Dem candidates is only chosen

by his ability to come up with the most devestating blow against the Republican candidate and if he dares to attack

one of his own he is out.

oh - the joy -

after a long days work to be back at the Salon and to see all the familiar names and faces - there is Kate - who I suspect looks just like Hillary and there is reality and xrandawhatever and there is heartbroken W.E.S, who has to pay his way in the heart of his long lost love and there is a Kate again - heck you post a lot - and did I miss anything important today?

Friday, March 7, 2008 02:16 PM

well tideswimmer -

that was a nice letter and if kate says something against such a nice letter she definetly is not a nice person.

Friday, March 7, 2008 02:42 PM

kate -

can you believe it! I wrote this nice letter for tideswimmer before you wrote your not so nice letter for tideswimmer.

I must have the gift of premonition!

dear glenn -

thank you for your excellent writing but something is really bothering me: Are you really sure that "the fuel of American journalism is protecting, rather than exposing, the secrets of the powerful?

If this would be true - why do I know so much more about the most powerful Americans than about people in my own family?

- Okay - some of my family members are Germans - and they much rather die then tell you - they once had a drinking problem - or they like to make friends in airport bathrooms but somehow I know all of these disturbing details about these "powerful" Americans and with the most powerful of them all with "George" I am so "intimate" I could write his biography.

mack -

- you couldn't be more right - and "Stop spinning" should be again reason enough not to play the "guessing game" (or only if you really got the magic crystal ball) - But some of us occasionally still like to play with the Hillary operatives. You just have to know who you are dealing with - Writers like Kate are completely useless, because they constantly repeat the same talking points but cythera can be quite "a trip".

If you give her a good rub she is able to perform amazing meltdowns and probably holds the record on deleted posts on this blog. I'm writing from a city, where the ruling class had to hide in castles forever, because their "underlings" were pretty mad at them - and once there was also this lovely girl and a hopeful young man, who had to kill themselves before their families realized, it would be better to make nice-nice. There is a statue of the girl (Julia) in a courtyard and you have to touch her left breast for good luck - and when I did it - prudish and shamefully like a good American - I have to confess - I thought for a second - No! only for a millisecond about a statue for Hillary - Sorry - I got carried away - because what I really wanted to tell you guys. Obama also "rocks" in Italy and last night I got a whole Trattoria to chant "Yes we can" - and then my daughter called me from the States and told me she earned three new "wings". You see

- she wanted to do something valuable with her time and started a competition with some of her friends, who is able to convert more Independents, Republicans or "Hopekillers" (Hillaries?) to the Obama camp. For "each soul" she "saves"

she pins a little angel wing on the fridge (remember: "What a wonderful life") Supposedly Republicans and Independents are "easy", while the "toughest cookies" are elderly woman, who are for Hillary (ljwalker or akasmith?) But - after a lot of reasoning (the most successful turning point seems to be Obamas anti war speech) - and some hugs - she even manages from time to time to crack one of those. So - there might be hope!
