There comes a time in almost everyone's lives where the decision about whether to have children gets made. For some (the ones I envy), it's always been a foregone conclusion that they will. Full stop. But for some it's a continuum of NOT deciding that gets them to their 40's with a career but no kids (and sometimes no spouse either). When I date a guy who suddenly realizes that he forgot to have kids and still can...to that I say - go forth and procreate and bring great kids into this world! Maybe consider the possibility that what's selfish is to deprive someone of their desire to have children. People are allowed to change their minds. (And divorced men with kids are a target rich environment for you.)
When Oprah ran the Marine Corps marathon I was sitting on my ass with a bag of chips (actually I think it was pita chips and hummus, but whatever) as she and all of the other runners RAN BY ON THE STREET OUTSIDE. I wasn't a particular fan of hers, but was inspired by her accomplishment. As a direct result of her example, I got off my rear and trained for an Oly Triathlon. With Team in Training, btw. And haven't looked back since. So, I raised $8k for Leukemia & Lymphoma research, lost 30 pounds and got my life back. Uh, sorry Ed, my bad.
As a 42 year old white woman with a graduate degree and high paying job I am supposed to be "for" Hillary, but I've never been and here is why: He's the better candidate. He's the one who inspired the Democratic party surge in the primaries and he's more inspirational, better organized, more refined. His "lack of experience" (what Joan likes to call it) is seen by me (and a lot of other people) as a fresh outsider's perspective. He's the better candidate. He ran a flawless campaign. If those angry women want to stay home in the fall, that's fine. We can get there without them.
What makes me the most sad is that these women who are yelling so loudly seem to think that this is their last chance for a woman president. NOT TRUE. Hillary paved the way for a woman to run again, and someone will. Someone who is well organized, smart, above the fray. Trust me, it will happen.
And whichever of you Hillary supporters came up on my lawn last nite and removed my Obama sign, I want it back. I promise I won't even call you a sore loser.
..and I'm going to let it lapse. I checked several times last night, Joan, to see if you had finally posted something about the beautiful speech. I was looking for something, anything that demonstrated to me that you had moved yourself and Salon past the pain of the primary. Imagine my disappointment when I signed on today to find "What Sarah Palin Means" right next to Rebecca Traister's shameful exploration on whether the Obama campaign should have chosen Hillary after all. Kos is my go-to now. Glenn, I'll miss you!
