NE Philly is full of people like that. Nothing but Democrats though. Bigoted, ignorant Democrats, but Democrats nonetheless. I hope we can get out the word on exactly how scary-conservative "McCain and the lady" are, so that NE Phila and others like them will just freaking stay home and not vote. But if the Dems lose, that's who lost it for us.
I can't say I disagree with your overall point, but this phrase....
In the context of poor women being encouraged to bear litters of children,
Ouch. Ouch.
Knee resculpturing? Really? They do that?
As to Sheila's remarks, I have to agree that some LLL zealots are over the top, and I was glad I had alternative sources for breastfeeding advice. Their so-called "classic" book about breastfeeding ("the womanly art") I found utterly and completely unhelpful, not to mention quite off-putting with its whole you-are-a-bad-mom-if-you-don't-stay-home-with-the-baby-until-she's-at-least-three theory. But I think it's really unfair to cite their support for adoptive breastfeeding as evidence they're wacko. It's certainly not an impossible thing to do, and while it might not be my choice -sounds like a LOT of work - it's certainly not harmful to any of the parties involved. In fact, it may be one of a limited number of choices available to an adoptee who is say, allergic to both milk and soy!
Anyway, as far as this speaker goes, it's kind of bizarre that LLL would choose her, I must agree with the poster who suggested they didn't know about her "other" interests. Seems like they have really tried to get away from that Nipple Nazi, wing-nut image in recent years, though obviously without a whole lot of success.
I am so sad that Ms. Yaskulka felt compelled to write in and defend her family. What the heck is wrong with people?? Criticizing this family, any family, for the way they react to the aftermath of tragedy is just beyond my understanding. Have some humanity.
Are these women you're talking about heads of state? And are they doing this in a public forum, to another world leader? Cause if so, yeah, they're asses too.
Well, I guess all these stories are pretty much anecdotal anyway, so I may as well add my 2c. I was startled last year (while pregnant) by the number of people who went out of their way to be kind to me, and to make friendly conversation. That also included repeatedly being offered seats on the train, which I sure appreciated, especially that last couple of months. Don't know what's up with those Metro riders, but SEPTA riders here were uniformly thoughtful!
