  • What IS Data Mining

[Read the article: The leak designed to save Alberto Gonzales]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I seem to recall when I first heard about "data mining" it involved a program proposed by or involving John Poindexter that would allow the government to scour public and private databases to identify possible terrorists.

If I'm correct, that program was rejected and such activities would therefore be illegal.

There was a different program that recorded and did keyword searches of phone calls.

So what, exactly, is our government up to?

  • Why don't they send Cindy Sheehan?

[Read the article: A new low of mindlessness for our media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why don't they send Cindy Sheehan or some genuine critic of the war to Iraq?

Okay, Sheehan is no military expert, but John Murtha is.

But they only want people who have an a priori view that we are winning the war to visit Iraq or interview the top brass.

  • A Rose by any other name

[Read the article: Diebold: New name, same bad voting machines!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

A rose by any other name would still smell just as sweet.

And a Turdblossom would stink just as much.

  • Democrats 2008 Bumper Snicker

[Read the article: War Room contest: Pick the Democrats' bumper sticker]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Osama Still Has a Job. Do You?

    Republicans:

_______________(candidate's name) is not George Bush!

  • How Long?

[Read the article: McCain's selective defense of "traditional marriage"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The putzes in the media still think Dewey beat Truman.

  • Glenn's New Book

[Read the article: National Review's new tough guy, Mark Hemingway]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Is "The He-Man Woman Hater's Club" already taken?

How about "Commander Codpiece and the Cult of Faux Masculinity?"

  • Ron Paul is an OB/GYN Doctor

[Read the article: Harry Reid's pro-life stance vs. Ron Paul's ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm not a Paulist but on the issue of abortion, he does have personal knowledge and experience. He is a former medical doctor who's specialty was obstetrics and gynecology.

I have yet to see a story that mentions WHY he is pro-life.

  • Same song, second verse

[Read the article: Reid and company target the true enemy: "Dodd and his allies"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Another variation of the "unserious" or "insincere" meme is "cold and calculating" vs "unhinged and angry." In other words, any time a Democrat shows passion or emotion they are either faking it or out of control.

  • The Press Are Not Kingmakers

[Read the article: Championing mainstream political thought while pretending to oppose it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Under out current system, the media annoint the "serious" candidates long before the first votes are ever cast.

Paul, Gravel, Kucinich, Richardson, Dodd and Huckabee all have one thing in common - their candidacies were pronounced DOA by the media.

Paul and Huckabee are the only ones that have been able to defy that diagnosis, perhaps because of the lack of quality of the “serious” candidates in the GOP. Paul raises more money than his competitors but still gets ignored, and the right-wing smear machine is gearing up to destroy Huckabee now that he is rising in the polls.

Ultimately, we are forced to choose between one of two candidates that most of us had little hand in choosing. I live in California and have voted in every election since 1978, but every Presidential primary (in both parties) has been over before I got a chance to vote.

Maybe someday the voters rather than the media will get to decide which candidates are “serious” and which issues are important.

  • The Man Who Would Be King

[Read the article: Mitt Romney's pursuit of tyrannical power, literally]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Zelig" Romney is another stealth candidate just like George W. Bush. Romney is a wolf in sheep's clothing, pretending to be a moderate in a strategery reminiscient of G-Dub's false claim to be a "compassionate conservative"

  • She cannot plead ignorance

[Read the article: Political Christmas wishes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Michelle M has not only heard the Word of God, she has read it with her own eyes from His holy book.

On judgment day she cannot plead ignorance; she cannot cry "Lord, Lord, forgive me for I did not know." She will be cast into the lake of fire, along with the rest of those who blaspheme by making war in the name of the Prince of Peace, those who claim to love God but hate His children and reject His Word.

  • Well, since his candidacy has been taken off life support

[Read the article: Joe Biden plays Cassandra]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

How about making him Secretary of State?

  • The Revenge of Ted Knight

[Read the article: Peggy Noonan is a serious "grown-up"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The chattering class do okay when they merely have to read the news, but when they veer off into providing analysis and opinion their inane and insipid callowness is exposed. They are talking heads, albiet empty ones.

They were chosen because they were telegenic, not for their intelligence. They have no apparent knowledge of history or life outside the beltway. Everything they encounter they try to force into predetermined narratives.

It’s the ascendancy of the Ted Knight school of journalism.

  • And the Village Idiots Said "Can I Get a Ho-Hum?"

[Read the article: 9/11 Commission: Our investigation was "obstructed"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Do you really expect the Broderites and the Dowdy types to do more than yawn at these revelations? Will our new AG do anything besides "look into" these allegations without ever charging anyone?

Will Nancy put impeachment back on the table?

You better sit down while you're waiting.

  • Whisper campaign starts against Obama

[Read the article: Jonah Goldberg and Glenn Reynolds warn of "social unraveling" if Obama loses]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Whisper campaign starts alleging that Obama fathered two black daughters.

I read that yesterday but I forget who originated it, it wasn't SadlyNo!

  • Maybe Stewart was bad on purpose

[Read the article: Stewart rambles, Colbert rallies! ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

They forced Stewart to go back on the air, but they couldn't force him to be funny. Maybe he is trying to show his corporate masters how badly he needs his writers.

  • The "Goldberg Principle"

[Read the article: "We're all fascists now"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You can prove any thesis to be true if you make up your own definitions of words.

  • Is there such a thing as "low dudgeon?"

[Read the article: Give us the lash, Mitt]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Just asking.

  • Obama's biggest problem is his fans

[Read the article: Making sense of Super Tuesday]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Yes they are enthusiastic and motivated, but their attitude doesn't wear well and gets annoying fast.

I'm not knocking Obama, just his fans. Here in the blogosphere they get angry and hostile if you disagree with them or, worse, criticize Obama.

  • Why does working for her mom make Chelsea fair game?

[Read the article: The Shuster fallout]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This is a common meme I keep seeing in comments about this incident.

Chelsea is helping her mom by calling superdelegates. From what I have heard, she asks the people she calls if they have any questions or concerns she can address. Most people have recognized that this is not inappropriate or unusual for the adult child of a politician.

But I keep hearing the idea that somehow her participation makes her fair game for comments and jokes. Shuster's letter suggest that he was miffed because Chelsea won't do interviews or talk to the press.

But why should she? She is not obligated to talk to them. Even if the fact that she is helping her mom is news, it doesn't give the press the right to invade her privacy.
