Original article: Carding on the catwalk?

Other practical reasons for the cut-off

There was a bit of writing about this a few months ago.

Essentially, modelling agencies were pointing out the fact that many 14 year-old girls are employed as models during a time when they can easily maintain the desired coat-hanger figure. Two years later, many of these girls finally completed puberty, only to realize they'll be out of a job, and back to being ordinary (and worse! "fat"!). That puts these girls at a higher risk to develop eating disorders just to remain as they were.

By waiting two years (which may not even be enough), the industry is also hoping to hire girls after they are physically mature, who are theoretically "thin enough" naturally, even as 'adults'.

I'm not sure it would work, but at least the thoughts are heading in the right direction.

Just like Soylent green

In the movie, women came with the homes, like furniture, and coordiated with the decor and value of the home.

Ick.

I would be more upset...

...that anyone assumes children aren't taught to read in Kindergarten.

But then again I'm a liberal elitist, so what do I know?

Generational

My grandmother was Gertrude, and her sisters were Leonora (called Lily) and Mildred. Their parents were very trendy, and their grandchildren are honoring them by using their....initials.

My friend teases his daughters (Betsy and Dewey) that he should have called them Dorcas, one of the the most popular girl's names in Colonial America.

Advertising

Last year, I saw advertising for emergency contraception in India. In Bangalore, there were ads on the back of auto-rikshaws (tuk tuks). In Goa, I saw an ad on TV.

When will the "modern, Western" world catch up?

(Wait, didn't George W. go to Yale?)

Your headline is as misleading as the memorandum itself

First, the memorandum does not include health care among its benefits. Does anyone know or care what it does include?

Second, this memorandum would expire after Obama leaves office, so it's not an example of fierce advocacy.

Obama is still a coward about marriage equality, and this is a weak example of attempting to mollify an angry community in order to preserve a fundraiser.

The DNC should cancel the event, and noone with a conscience should attend.
