more multis out there than you think

Wikipedia had a great index of famous multi-racial people, it was really amazing to see.

Overall, this having to pick a race, even for people who are "white" seems ridiculous. The word white doesn't cover it, just like black isn't inclusive enough. And Caucasian...oh please. Anglo, European, national origin, what ever, it still seems pretty limiting. I think calling Obama a black man is a shorthand for someone who has had the experience of being treated as a black man, not necessarily a negation of his biracial identity. Please see Dr. Gates excellent documentaries on "African American Lives 1 & 2" about living as one color or another.

And Obama isn't the only famous person from Illinois with a white mom and a Kenyan dad: Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave & the Nightwatchman shares the same heritage.

Original article: How gay it would be

preparing to be flamed...

I'm not sure how I feel about the article & stereotyping, but as a straight woman, I am very tired of the macho, red meat, sly stone kind of guy. Why? Because he is the height of narcissism. One line that rang absolutely true is about boys and their mothers being like the Federal Reserve -- little understood. Then they grow up to be men. And their understanding of women has not changed. Yes not all men are like this, but I thought I'd throw my thoughts in the stew.

flame on.

ps- not that gay men can't be narcissistic, but I don't have to date them.

Original article: Bully for Nancy Pelosi!

baggage

Yes there was a lot of sexist remarks that sounded like they came from the elementary school playground - looking at you Chris Matthews & Mike Barnicle - butin all the coverage of Clinton, it was very rarely mentioned how much baggage this woman carries. Leaving aside Monica/Whitewater/the White House years, her husband has raised an ungodly amount of money for himself and his library through some rather shady deals. Please read the story in Vanity Fair (the one with Angelina on the cover) for more info. She has taken a lot of PAC money in her races for Senate.

I can only assume that there was some deal between Bill & fmr DNC head Terry McAuliffe to make her the defacto nominee, which she was at the beginning, before Iowa. because had there been some non-partisan advisor who could have given her a clear picture, she would have been told that gender and style aside (she does lean towards shrill), Rush and the Swift Boater-ilk would have a field day picking her apart.

As a woman, there wasn't a chance I'd vote for Hillary in the primary. I found it very hard to even watch her speak, as stylistically I find her to be condescending, patronizing and shrill. Added with the Bosnia BS & other remarks, I think she did herself & her political legacy a gross disservice. This is apart from that I disagree with her politically on many stands she has taken. She could have had a Senate career like Ted Kennedy, but now that is not possible.

leafblowers....

can anyone explain, b/c I have not handled one myself, why leafblowers can't be used like vacuum cleaners and have a bag attached? I mean aside from the guarantee of continued work for the lawn companies.

Also, noise was a good reason why I moved out of NYC. Not the only one, but I'm glad I did. Now if I can ban leafblowers or change them here in North Cackalacky, I'll be in good shape.

olbermann/turley

I noticed that theauthor did not cite the interview Keith did after w/ constitutional law expert Johnathan Turley, where they both explained that the country has been operating without any laws along FISA lines, and that this law was better than nothing.

Perhaps someone made this point earlier, but I can't read 200 posts to see if someone said this.

Greenwald, a correction would be nice.

Keith must be doing something right if everyone is piling on him.

if there's anyone you should be pissed off at...

it's Harry Reid, who did not have to put this legislation up. Control of the Senate as a majority leader means you control this crap. Remember Obama is one of 100 right now, not President of the Free World.

~See Rachel Maddow's show a day or two ago for more on this Harry Reid thing.

When I want forum etiquette, I'll ask for it. No need for you to be a jerk about it.

how nice for you author

All I saw in your text was about moving to sophisticated liberal cities with your best friend. I'm pretty sure I didn't see much about how you managed to support yourselves in those expensive cities. Or how you handled healthcare expenses, or managed to get sick days to take care of your kid.

No I don't expect all gloom and doom, but a lot of crucial information was not mentioned in this article to make it worthwhile, in favor of shiny happy name-dropping memories.

why the weird schedule

I have always wondered why doctors/residents, etc have incredibly long hours that would not be allowed in other professions. Anyone?

Also, I find it kind of annoying that I pay a co-pay to see a *doctor* and I wind up with a PA or someone with a set of initials. Not to knock their work, it is obviously valuable, but who do I have to kill to see a doctor? And why can people other than doctors write prescriptions? I would think Drs. would feel this is an infringement on their...doctorness. I feel a bit weird about entrusting my medical care to someone who is not a doctor, despite what training they may have. How about a PA copay rate, instead of a Doctor co-pay? (ok, i kid, i kid)

Anyone? Thoughts, answers?
