I am a Christian and I have mixed emotions when watching Real Time and I intend to see Bill's movie. However, the irrational (a/k/a religious) side of me says "Oh Bill, you are so going to hell." But then the other side of me, the rational (a/k/a spiritual) side, says that he is a biggot towards Christians and is doing exactly the same thing he accuses Christians of doing. He contradicts his own point of view. For me, that is the sum of Bill Maher. Watching him is like passing by a terrible car accident, its interesting and hopeful and tragic and provoking...but I go on my way glad I was not responsible for the accident.
I am from South Alabama: born here, live here, will die here. I understand the point or Mr. Lind's article and my reaction is "oh my God". First, I need to point out that when an Alabamian says "We don't care what the North thinks," we really mean that. We are not just saying it...we really don't care. Really! Really! Its nothing personal, we just don't care.
Don't accuse us of taking the resources made available to us and using it to stimulate our always sluggish economy. Don't be angry because we despise the unions. We don't hate you because you love the unions. Just live and let live, PEACE MAN. Its human nature to get angry when your neighbor succeeds, but don't be hating on us. We understand the domestic auto makers are money-grubbing jerks that drove that industry into the ground, they are American like the rest of us. We forgive them. They should come and tour our foreign auto plants, have a cold beer, maybe fish a while, and then go back and try again. The South rose from the ashes, maybe its time the North gets inspired by that instead of being condescending about it.
We will certainly keep yall in our prayers. I can't go into all the details of what will work or not work in this economic mess. I am not that educated, but common sense has always been the hallmark of the Southern mind. Maybe that is a tool that might improve the Northern philosophy.
Chat at ya later, I got collards to pick. God bless the North, God bless the South, God bless our nation! We are not divided, we are just different.
I truly appreciate this article. As a conservative, white, angry, Southern, and educated female, it is difficult to have views contrary to the mainstream Southern belief system. I mostly keep quiet about the fact that I believe abortion should be legal, marijuana should be legalized nationwide, gay marriage should be allowed and the rebel flag should be outlawed. I am a commited member of a Christian church and believe in the teachings of the Bible. So how, you wonder, can I believe in abortion, or gay marriage, or mixed race babies and be from the South...well, like Jesus said to his disciple, Peter, when Peter questioned Jesus' unorthodox kindness, "What is that to you?"
I can only be accountable for myself. You probably think my beliefs are a contradiction. Christ was considered a contradiction to mainstream thought when he made history. I think there is room on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line for growth and understanding. We have the innate ability to judge what we don't understand. Don't judge all of the South, especially if you have not lived here.
As for whether or not Obama was born in the United States, whatever. I don't care if he was born on Mars, if he can lead us to a better place, call me a Martian.
