The GOP is in danger of becoming a fringe party whose national candidates can only win in the South, because they have no moderate representatives who appeal to anyone on the east and west coasts or in most of the north.
Republicans seem to have a death wish, turning on their own, such as the three senators who dared to vote in favor of the stimulus package. The only Republicans who can win in states like Pennsylvania are those like Arlen Spector and they are trying their best to defeat him in the primary.
And when they can't find logical arguments against President Obama, they descend into dirty tricks, claiming he's a Muslim and questioning his citizenship, just the way they attacked Bill Clinton with spurious false accusations.
Do they not get that the majority of people in this country, not just those who "drank the Kool-Aid", want President Obama to succeed because they are losing their jobs and their homes and their health care? They are reminiscent of those who fought against FDR and how did that work our for the GOP? He was elected to four terms.
The nation's electorate is changing, only one-third of the Millenium generation born from the mid-eighties, were eligible to vote in 2008, and they overwhelmingly support Obama as do those who will vote for the first time in 2010.
In addition, the demographic makeup of the nation is shifting toward people of color.
If the Republicans don't find a way to stop being the party of old conservative white men (plus an Ann Coulter or two), they will go the way of the Whigs and Dixiecrats
Rick Santorum didn't lose his Pennsylvania senate seat because of one interview, he lost because his far-right views didn't represent the views of the people of the state, one which he hadn't lived in for years.
Thankfully the voters of my state got rid of him or he would have been poised to run for national office despite his idiotic views on such matters as homosexuality.
And if the GOP is foolish enough to nominate Pat Toomey instead of Arlen Spector, it will lose the other state senate seat in 2010.
In this instance, what really needs to be reformed is Mel Gibson who talked the talk but can't walk the walk
If he was such a strong believer, wouldn't he have married a Catholic in the first place instead of a woman he wouldn't be able to spend eternity with in his view?
Liberals I know have no interest in telling people how many children they should have
As for those seven children, it's reported that they are furious at him for leaving their mother and refuse to even speak to him
I think it's interesting to read what a conservative has to say on various issues, especially since his column, from what I've seen, isn't filled with the venomus rantings of many on the right who are still desperately trying to prove that the president is a Muslim terrorist born in Kenya and that they better arm themselves for a second American Revolution.
I disagree strongly with his assessment of George W. Bush (and find it curious he would point to LBJ as an example since no liberal I know approves of what he did in Viet Nam).
Bush and Cheney's attack on our Constitutional rights was breathtaking and I will never understand why the Democrats did not do more to try to impeach them.
But his last point that no president can "break" America is one I wish he would pass along to the true wingnuts who claim everything from President Obama being a socialist to the antiChrist
Although I have been a registered Democrat for all my voting life, I had planned to switch my registration in order to be able to vote for Arlen Spector in the GOP primary.
While I know he will not always agree with our party just as he didn't always follow the GOP party line, I admire his brilliance and independence and have written to the Pennslyvania Democratic party asking that they strongly consider endorsing him.
The GOP, by targeting the senators who voted their consiceince on the stimulus, is cutting off its nose to spite its face and will soon be nothing more than a small regional party representing 25-30 percent of the voters.
Dick Cheney's continuing defense of torture, torture which experts say was ineffective in garnering information, is appalling.
Waterboarding has been favored as a torture technique because it leaves no marks and has been used by everyone from those conducting the Spanish Inquisition to the Khmer Rouge. I am ashamed that my nation has joined the ranks of such evil regimes.
I cannot understand why the Democratic party did not move on impeachment when so many of the illegal and unconstitutional acts of the previous administration were known years ago.
I was among those who thought after President Obama was elected, we should move on since our nation is facing so many challenges at home and abroad.
But Cheney's continued picking at this scab makes it appear he is the one who wants a full investigation of what was done, despite all the harm that may do to our nation. And frankly, President Obama's indecision on the matter is not making him look good either.
Perhaps it will take a full disclosure of the sins committed in the name of the War on Terror, a war which cannot be won by our side emulating terrorist behavior, before we can truly cleanse our country's soul and not sound like those Germans who said after WW II that they didn't know what was happening or were only following orders.
