Singing a different tune

Sen. Obama can go with rapper Ludacris' suggestion for veep from his new release, "Politics":

"I'm back on it like I just signed my record deal,

yeah the best is here,

the Bentley Coup paint is dripping wet,

it got sex appeal,

never should have hated,

you never should've doubted him,

with a slot in the president's iPod Obama shattered 'em,

Said I handled his biz and I'm one of his favorite rappers,

Well give Luda a special pardon if I'm ever in the slammer,

Better yet put him in office, make me your vice president,

Hillary hated on you, so that bitch is irrelevant,

Jesse talking slick and apologizing for what?

if you said it then you meant it how you want it have a gut!

and all you other politicians trying to hate on my man,

watch us win a majority vote in every state on my man,

you can't stop what's bout to happen,

we bout to make history,

the first black president is destined and it's meant to be,

the threats ain't fazing us, the nooses or the jokes,

so get off your ass, black people, it's time to get out and vote!

paint the White House black and I'm sure that's got 'em terrified,

McCain don't belong in ANY chair unless he's paralyzed,

Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped,

Ball up all of his speeches and I throw em like candy wrap,

cause what you talking I hear nothing even relevant,

and you the worst of all 43 presidents,

get out and vote or the end will be near,

the world is ready for change because Obama is here!

cause Obama is here,

The world is ready for change because Obama is here!"

Democratic purge

To the posters who said I'm the only one viewing Glenn Greenwald's column as a call for cleansing the party of anyone who might be considered a moderate, perhaps letters such as this one from Mister Marker were meant in jest and I missed the humor. I am curious as to who is going to decide whether one thinks, acts and votes like a Republican in this quest for party purity:

"Glenn Doesn't Go Far Enough

I think the time has come for drastic measures. All Democrats who think, act and vote like Republicans should be expelled from the party. Period.

Yes, this will cause problems in the short term. In the long term it will make it clear what the Democratic Party stands for and, more importantly, what it DOESN'T.

Central argument

The Democratic party has gone down this ideological path before. It didn't recover until Bill Clinton, with his middle-of-the-road philosophy, became the first president from our party elected to two terms since Franklin Roosevelt.

When the Obama-Clinton primary contest started to become really ugly and vicious, a friend said that he thought what this is all really about is wresting any party leadership positions away from moderates and giving control to the ultra-liberals.

While the most noise is always made by those who are extremists, such as Fox News on the right, and increasingly, MSNBC on the left, the majority of people in this country are centrists, and they are precisely the ones upon whom winning the 2008 elections depend.

Radical idea

Liberals want to stop the Iraq War and rein in the abuses of the Bush administration but they also believe in the right to free speech, even for those who disagree with them.

Radicals think they are the sole hope of our democracy and if somebody disagrees, they are traitors to their party or even worse, Republicans masquerading as Democrats. And when their candidate does something that liberals find offensive, radicals find ways to justify it. I'm stunned that anyone would use Sen. Obama's vote for FISA as a positive, citing it to prove he's really a moderate.

Carrying out the demonstrated wishes of the electorate is an excuse that was used by people like Richard Nixon, Newt Gingrich and George Bush for their actions.

Elected officials of conscience need to consider all viewpoints and then do what they think is right, not what is perceived as politically correct at the moment. The Republican senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Spector, has done that frequently, and it's one reason he keeps winning in what otherwise has become a Blue state.

In the cards

It seems to be OK to call Sen. John McCain old, senile, angry, a bad pilot, a man who cheated on his first wife, another GWB, a flip flopper and a hypocrite.

But not a single word can be said questioning anything Sen. Barack Obama says or does without accusations of racism being hurled.

This campaign is all about the candidate. Reportedly his message to Democratic House members was that his election "is the moment the world is waiting for. I have become a symbol of America returning to its best traditions."

There are many people in key states like Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio, where his lead is dropping, who could care less about symbolism or about his race but would like to know what he plans to actually do.

Suggesting people check their tire pressure is not an energy plan.
