  • a little levity helps

[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I was on a turbulent Southwest flight over Texas that had the woman next to me praying loudly in Spanish and clutching her baby while all around us just-filled drinks and coffee cups were sloshing everywhere.

I was just starting to wonder if I should be alarmed when the flight attendant's clear, light-hearted voice came over the intercom, saying, "There are three naked men walking down the street."

    Everyone stopped and looked around.

"Which one of them is Ronald McDonald?"

As we gaped at each other she said, with perfect comic timing, "The one with the sesame-seed buns."

With that we figured the plane probably wasn't about to crash, after all.

  • What a Disappointment

[Read the article: Goodbye to Audiofile]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Audiofile was the very feature that brought me to Salon.

I will miss it very much.

    Sigh.

    Two-Headed Woman is Pregnant!

One head wants the baby; the other says, Absolutely not!

In my anatomy & physiology class we debated the consequences of morning sickness for a two-headed woman-- which head would throw up?

  • Playboy Interview

[Read the article: Norman Mailer 1923 - 2007]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There's a fascinating interview with Norman Mailer in this month's Playboy (I only get it for the articles.....) where he talks about his evolving spiritual beliefs, from atheism to a belief in a God who is NOT all-powerful but who learns from his creation, humanity.

It was the first thing of Mailer's I've read, and stirred up some curiosity.

    They lie.

  • Personal Experience Bears This One Out

[Read the article: Quarter of Clinton supporters would vote McCain over Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have a colleague, a progressive/liberal Democrat who drives a hyvrid and converted her house to solar panels, who was so disturbed by my vote for Obama in the CA primary and by Clinton's fall after Super Tuesday that she swore she'd vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee. This is a bright, well-educated woman in her 50's who is working on her PhD and greatly fears for the future of this country, especially its economy.

I told her, in turn, that I was sincerely hoping not to have to hold my nose and vote for Hillary, but if forced by circumstances, I would do so in the general election if she were the Democratic candidate. (I'm a 51 year old female with a private medical practice.)

I have thoroughly vetted both candidates and only slowly came to my conclusions. The only conclusion I can draw about my differences with this female colleague-- corny as it sounds -- is that she is basing her decision on fear, whereas I'm basing my decision on hope.

I have long suspected that most Obama supporters would line up behind Clinton if he dropped out. How sad, and scary, to see the reverse is not as true.

  • Here's Another Spin For You.....

[Read the article: New Clinton camp spin contradicts old Clinton camp spin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

From the New York Times online:

Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday her close race with Barack Obama might result in a shared ticket. Speaking on CBS’s Early Show, she said, “Well, that may be where this is headed, but of course we have to decide who is on the top of the ticket.” She said her victory in Ohio indicated that the choice should be her.

    **********************

WHAT? After losing 11 straight primaries (12, if you count Vermont), and despite remaining behind in delegate count, she thinks SHE should be given top billing on a shared ticket? Because she won OHIO?

    It takes my breath away.

  • What does this mean?

[Read the article: Clinton camp goes on offense against Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"First, disenfranchise voters -- Prevent new votes in Florida and Michigan. Stop voting in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, Kentucky, South Dakota, Montana, West Virginia and Indiana."

Although I don't agree with Clinton about Florida and Michigan (they essentially disenfranchised themselves) at least I know what she's talking about. But what on earth does she mean by "stop voting" in those other states?

Up until now, although I support Obama, I've had sympathy for Clinton and have been willing to vote for her if she wins the nomination. But watching her thrash and flail and PROJECT all of her campaign's dark-heartedness onto the Obama campaign has put me over the edge. I have now lost ALL respect for the woman. At this point I can't stand her.

Is she angling to be McCain's running mate after she finishes destroying the Democratic party?

    Enough, Hillary. Enough.

  • You Could Say.....

[Read the article: Polls: Obama weathers Wright controversy ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...that Obama should not attend any church unless he is in lock-step agreement with every single word his pastor utters.

...that Obama is perfectly capable of listening to people he disagrees with without rejecting them out of hand.

...that Obama clearly should have thrown Wright under the bus--maybe even years ago-- and that he should trample over ANYONE who gets in the way of his campaign or ever utters a politically incorrect statement.

....that Obama is capable of compassion, humanity, and loyalty towards his former pastor, even while finding Wright weirdly stuck in a time warp.

...that Obama wouldn't dare alienate the black vote by disowning Wright.

...that Obama is too weak to turn his back on an old friend, even when it would be politically expedient; that he lacks the "killer instinct" necessary to win.

....that the American public is smart enough to know that you can't hold a candidate personally responsible for everything that comes out of his/her followers' mouths.

...that the American public is hysterical enough to freak out at hearing "God Damn America" and there is no way way Obama can win the general election.

....that every candidate's pastors, ministers, and mentors all need to be vetted now; the hell with separation of church and state.

...that Obama didn't lie or deny an unpleasant truth. He faced it head-on and dealt with it truthfully.

You COULD say that perhaps the majority of Americans find that kind of honesty and loyalty admirable.

    I'm just sayin'.

  • This Won't Be read......

[Read the article: Why Hillary Clinton should be winning]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...after 500 + comments already posted, most of which I won't be able to wade through, BUT, let's speak to basics.

#1) Both candidates knew the rules of the primary system going in

#2) Clinton's campaign had the clear advantage under this set of rules, having campaigned TWICE before in the primary system

#3) The Obama campaign has fared better under the rules without cheating

    Therefore

Why the complaining that it isn't fair?

    Really, I don't get it.
