  • Yes, it's what I'd tell childern

    [Read the article: Starving season]

Caroline Nicholl: Are the opinions you voice here the same ones that you would tell your own children? "Kids, sometimes you just have to let the 'excess populations' starve to death. Them's the breaks."

    ----------------------------------------------

It might not be the wording that I would use, but absolutely, I'd tell my childern and others that sometimes problems cannot be solved and terrible things will happen.

Millions of people die every year because of Malaria, most of them childern, that could be prevented by the use of DDT. Where's the outrage for them?

Instead, people decided that protecting birds is more important that saving childern from dieing.

Changing how food aid works will still not solve the famine problem in Africa, because the problem does not stem from a lack of food, it stems from problems with how much of Africa is ruled. Governments let their people starve so that they can get more aid.

As to reading comprehension, did you not notice that Niger had a RECORD harvest last year. A RECORD harvest, yet again they are starving this year. Why, because the wealthy, and that means connected to the government, sold off the food for cash instead of saving food for their own people.

Africa can feed itself but doesn't because their ruling elites get far more money by letting their people starve, and that will always be the pattern until Africa gets government that cares about its people rather than about enriching itself.

  • Different doesn't mean dumber

[Read the article: Harvard saves face]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Women don't do as well in science and math, and men don't do as well in pretty much everything else.

So what. It doesn't mean one gender is better than the other.

The whole thing has gotten silly. You have women talking about women's intuition then complaining that there are no differences in the genders.

Of course there are differences, it's why teams made up of males and females do so well, because they both have subtle differences in how they approach and view problems, and thus working together are better than the sum of the individuals.

  • Most does not mean all

[Read the article: Salon interview: Harry Reid]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Xanthro: That said, most bills pass with very few to no Democrats supporting the bill.

    --------------------------------------------

Rosiland Lord: I'm not so sure about that. What about the bills concerning going to war with Iraq, the Patriot Act? There were a lot of Democratic votes in favor of them.

More recently, 25 Democrats voted to nominate Michael Hayden, a staunch loyalist of the Bush Administration, as director of the CIA. 15 Democrats voted against it.

    ======================================================

Do you actually not understand the term most, or do you just enjoy using the childish techniques of the Rove political machine.

Most does not mean all, of course you can find some bills that Democracts voted for, in fact, in my post that you quoted I made this clear, but you like to be dishonest and ignored that part.

    -------------------------------------------------------

Rosiland Lord: All I can say is that you're living in a dream world.

    ======================================================

And you live in the World of either no reading comprehension or deliberate dishonesty.

  • Please stop talking about peak oil

[Read the article: Did Al get the science right?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

because the way it's always presented here is so wrong it's worthless.

The World will not run out of oil for thousands of years.

What we will run out of is easily drilled oil. The US and Canada has trillons of barrels of oil, far more than has been discovered in the rest of the World combined, but it's in tar sands and shale. Very hard to remove, but very hard doesn't mean impossible.

Asian pirates aren't going to be attacking the North West US, and relying on Peak Oil to cut comsuption is almost as silly.

  • Yes, you're being dishonest

[Read the article: Salon interview: Harry Reid]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There are hundreds of bills every year, picking out even a dozen doesn't come close to a majority. While you may want to claim that a few bills is alot, it's not the majority which is what I said.

Most means majority, not whatever strange definition you wish to grant to the term.

Pulling out cabinet positions is the height of dishonesty, have you been taking points from Cheney?

The President gets to chose his or her cabinet, having 12 people vote against a cabinet position is huge. These are almost always unanimous votes.

Guess what, you'll also see Democrats joining Republicans in passing legisilation naming Joe Blow the citzen of the month of no place Utah.

  • Why abortion is bad

[Read the article: The misrepresentation of abortion's "middle ground"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I had an abortion. It was not a difficult or tragic decision for me. It was something I wish I didn't have to go through, because it was not particularly fun and I had better things to do with the money,

    ----------------------------------------

Right there and that says it all. At the very least it costs money and isn't exactly enjoyable.

Nobody would just chose to get pregnant in order to get an abortion, this means abortions is bad, because it is something people would avoid if possible.

Plenty of medical procedures follow this same rule. We wouldn't have them just for fun, we have them because the results are worth it.

Nobody has a heart transplant just for fun, this means heart transplants are bad, it's just that the alternative of death is much worse.

Abortions are the same. Each women needs to weight whether the choice of abortion is better or worse than the choice of an unwanted pregnancy. The government has no more right to interfer in this choice than it does for any other medical decision.
