If the Democratic Party had any backbone, they could bring the troops home from Iraq, and throw the whole Bush Administration out of the White House, including Dick Cheney, and produce a Democrat for a president.
All they would have to do is start impeachment hearings of the entire Bush Administration. They have more than enough evidence for it.
--------------------------------------------
Last I read the Republicans are in the majority in the House and Senate, which means not a single bill will make it out of committee without Republican support.
When was this elections that put the Democrats in charge?
No wonder Democrats keep losing despite the majority of people supporting our agenda, people somehow believe we can just snap our fingers and make anything we want happen.
No wonder you are all so pissed, we haven't been waving our magic wands and making everything better. I'll go pull mine out and change the color of the sky to whatever it is in your World.
Ben: A bunch of people who never should have been born
I am referring, of course, to those who drive $50,000 Hummers, eat foie gras and drink Fiji water, spend $600 on shoes and $3000 on fur coats, while this is going on in Africa.
---------------------------------------------------------
The money you spent on the computer to write the above could have been used to feed the poor in Africa, or the money you spent to rent the computer.
I highly doubt that you are sitting around naked feed loading computer time and only eat 800 calories and day and send the rest of your money to Africa.
Guess what, I'll drive my $50,000 car, eat my tasty foie gras, drink what ever what and buy whatever shoes I desire, and buy any clothes I may think I want.
Billions of dollars has produced nothing but more famine, and spending billions will only mean more famine in the future.
People are starving in Africa because much of it is a hellish place politically. Are we to invade and have 25 more Iraqs on our hand?
It was so nice to send food to Ethiopia in the 80s and have the government use it as a weapon.
Xanthro: Last I read the Republicans are in the majority in the House and Senate, which means not a single bill will make it out of committee without Republican support.
--------------------------------------------------
Rosalind Lord: Even if that's true, why have so many Democrats supported so many of the same things the Republicans did? Like the war in Iraq? Like drilling for oil in the Arctic? Why are they silent as there's talk of invading Iran? Why have Hillary Clinton and John Edwards said that they're "for gays" but believe marriage "should only be between a man and a woman?" Xanthro, can you explain this?
====================================================
Yes, it's true, Republicans control the Senate and House.
There is no drilling for oil yet in the Arctic, but there would be if fewer Democratic senators were around to filibuster the bill.
Some Democracts take the stand that Marriage should be between and Man and Women and gays should have a civil union, because there isn't a State in the Union that would vote for Gay Marriage, thus, supporting it could cost you the election.
------------------------------
Rosalind Lord: And I find it inexcusable that they're not willing to impeach Bush. Even if the Republicans do dominate Congress, I find it hard to believe there aren't ways the Democrats can serious pursue impeachment of Bush.
=========================================
This is so naive I don't know where to begin. Democrats can't pass any bill no matter how small and insignificant without Republican support. None, no impeachment, no hearings, no naming a federal airport, no nothing.
What part of that do you not understand?
---------------------------------------------
Rosalind Lord: I just don't believe the Democrats are as helpless as they seem to like to think. Nixon was president when the Watergate hearings happened. Shouldn't that tell the Democrats something?
===============================================
And Democrats where in control of both the Senate and House at that time, and as such could impeach Nixon. They no longer control either legislative branch and hence cannot do anything to Bush, other than fillabuster bills in the Senate.
------------------------------------------------
Rosalind Lord: Democrat apologists act like the Democrats are totally powerless and there's nothing they can do to change things in Congress. But the fact is: There IS something they can do: they can NOT VOTE for things Republicans support. Sure, they may be "better" about social security. But that's not enough. If they really want to strengthen their party, they have to challenge the Republicans more.
====================================================
Are you very very young? Perhaps that might explain why you don't seem to understand the difference between relative power in the Nixon and Bush administrations and why impeachment is not possible right now.
That said, most bills pass with very few to no Democrats supporting the bill, or everyone supports it because the republicans have decided to let a vote happen on the bill.
Once again, no vote on any bill can happen unless some Republicans support the bill.
"There is never any excuse for not feeling empathy and moving yourself to activity when you see people starving or suffering."
There is plenty of reason for feeling empathy for a situation and doing nothing, in fact, sometimes doing nothing is the more moral stand, because doing something only makes the situation worse.
Spending money to feed or sending food to Africa is not a solution to starvation, in fact, in only equals more starvation and more dieing children.
How exactly is sending money and food this time going to be any different than last 50 years? Has starvation stopped? No, it's only gotten worse, and that's partly our fault.
In the 1980s food was used as a weapon in Ethiopia, it's currently used as a weapon in Zimbabwe. The governments use foreign aid food to reward supporters and withhold food to opponents. It’s immoral and participating in its continuance is immoral.
