Chosing a child's last name

When I and my partner were about to be parents (now more than 28 years ago), we decided to pass on the last name by sex, i.e. a boy would have my last name and a girl would have hers.

One brief thought

The obscene is subject as object. - Sartre

Original article: License to lie

It can't happen here?

"While there is no danger that America will become a fascist, totalitarian or theocratic state ..."

It is happening here. In addition to all the crimes documented in the review, there is the theft of the 2000 election using the Supreme Court and, very likely, the 2004 election using the same tactics – now more finely honed - that brought the previous one within reach of theft.

Watergate was not about water!

"Thursday night there was already disagreement among Plamegate obsessives"

Start using the English language already. Be imaginative!

Plameout

Going down in Plames

Accepting Plame

Getting Plamed

You get the idea.

Lack of imagination on the right

Electrocution, hanging, gassing ... big deal. If these people had any imagination, they would be asking for drawing and quartering, garotting, being burned at the stake.

I say, "No guts, no glory!"

"not going to incent the further destruction of the human life"

Incent? What the fuck is incent? There are so many entirely valid words that could be used to make Bolton's point. Incent is not one of them.

Ann Coulter is either ...

a very devious, liberal performance artist or mentally ill. There is no middle ground. – Mrs. Betty Bower

Original article: What else we're reading

The pot calls the kettle black, but it's not

As sclatter points out, the assumptions about evolutionary psychology display a weak understanding of it. Too, it is interesting to read the comments about the sex-segregated menu immediately after reading the poorly-thought-out "Echidne of the Snakes." The comments demonstrate exactly what Echidne tries to criticize, but they are truly guilty of the crime.

Whose issue is violence?

"In other words, it's not depicting violence as a "women's issue." Of course, it is a women's issue, but it's not only a women's issue. It's a men's issue, it's a family issue, it's a public health issue."

We don't have "black," "gay," and "woman" problems in this country. We have white, straight, and male problems.

We don't have a problem of poverty, but of wealth.

Problems should not be identified by their victims, but by their perpetrators. Members of the perpetrating class are the ones who should take the greatest responsibility for cleaning up the messes created by their cohorts.

I have been involved in the civil rights, feminist and gay rights movements because I am a straight, white male. I am in a better position to make a case to the racists, homophobes and chauvinists because I have no apparent (to them) self interest, and I am not a member of the feared group.

Original article: The Olbermann factor

A small, but important, correction

"the Bush administration launched its pre-election anti-terror public relations blitz"

The Bush regime has never had an anti-terror PR campaign. It is a pro-terror - terrorize the US public - campaign.

barfometer

For future occasions of disgust, may I suggest: vomitometer. Has much better rhythm than barfometer.

Style vs fashion ...

courtesy of Lester Bangs:

Style is originality; fashion is fascism. The two are eternally and unalterably opposed.

Original article: Female hacks in Iran

Separate and unequal

"This is such a compelling story about women finding ways to unravel modes of oppression."

This would be a lot more compelling if the Iranians were hammering on the men for there vile behavior.

Once again, society (Iran's in this case) is requiring the victims to accommodate the victimizers.

As is true of all instances of oppression, the problem is the oppressors - men, in this case - not the women - the oppressed.
