Some Frankness About Whitewater
[Read the article: The GOP attack plan for Hillary Clinton]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I simply reacting to the assertion that "the Whitewater investigation never produced enough evidence to file criminal charges."
For the record, the special prosecutor filed charges and obtained convictions against eleven people including several close friends and partners of the Clintons -- Robert Palmer, Web Hubbell, Christopher Wade, Neal Ainley, Stephen Smith, Larry Kuca, Jim Guy Tucker, James McDougal, Susan McDougal, William Marks and John Haley.
A parallel prosecution obtained convictions against four additional individuals -- David Hale, Eugene Fitzhugh, Charles Matthews and John Latham.
The Clintons were never charged largely because Susan McDougal refused to answer questions directed to her as to whether then President Clinton perjured himself during her trial. She was held in contempt of court by federal Judge Susan Webber Wright for refusing to answer these questions.
Susan McDougal, Robert Palmer, Stephen Smith and Christopher Wade all received presidential pardons from Mr. Clinton during his last hours in office. At the same time, Mr. Clinton agreed to a five year suspension of his law license for making statements Judge Wright found "intentionally false" in the Paula Jones matter. As part of that agreement, the special prosecutor agreed to terminate his investigation.
