Enough of the Reagan Myth!
I'm sick of hearing the myth that Reagan was a great president and Jimmy Carter was a failure. Consider this: the full flowering of what Reagan started is George W. Bush. I am unimpressed by the notion that Reagan didn't push his ideas to their extreme because he was wise. When he wasn't taking naps, he pushed as hard as he could. I know this is a minority opinion, but I believe we would have been better off with a full flowering of Jimmy Carter's policies. Take the energy crisis, for example. When Reagan came into office, he said, "Be happy. Don't worry about it." He took the solar panels off the White House. Look where we are now. With Carter's policies we would now have had a moral foreign policy. The genocide done by Reagan in Central America paved the way for the debacle in Iraq as well as a near total loss of American prestige worldwide. Reagan was an actor, a very good one. He put a smiley face on the destruction of the New Deal. He made it sound good to lavish riches on the super rich, while taking away services from disadvantaged children. Where is the greatness in this?
