Can Stephen Colbert save America?

A new book argues that Colbert, Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are good for democracy. But is it taking late-night comedy too seriously?

Colbert and Stewart and the rest are tame. They take orders

from defense contractors just as Carson and SNL did. The first order of business is to flood the airwaves with low culture ignorance. So 99% of their humor is shallow and inoffensive. The other 10% is stupid and boring.

Order #2, right now, is to get Obama elected. They can't be as blatant about it as Olberman because Colbert and freinds enjoy playing indedendent liberals. Without that, their credibility would be out the window. But the sneers at Hillary on 'Comedy' Central are constant, if a tad muted, and the praise for Obama is just as regular as at MSNBC. But so far no one has noticed, and the thoughtful liberal pose is holding.

As for the shallow commentary, the only thing that's consistently funny is The Word, in which the subtitles show how silly right wing ideology is. The rest of the time, we might as well be listening to Bill O himself.
