While I haven't read any of these pieces, I wouldn't be surprised to find it as poorly researched as his dreadful "Koba the Dread" where he picks an unnecessary fight (Stalin was bad!) then relies waaaay too heavily on the crusty old Cold War Historians like Richard Pipes and, to a lesser extent, Robert Conquest to prove his point that Lenin was like totally evil too. Then he picked a truly bizarre fight with Hitchens assuming that Hitchens was still the radical Trotskyist he was in the 70s when they worked together...it was kind of surreal to read actually.
Granted he can craft a beauty of a line, but if it's cogent analysis you're looking for, then look elsewhere.
