These are all murder or crime stories. Not my idea of summer reading. Seems to appeal more to men than woman. I would have liked to see a more diverse selection.
Perhaps this list could have been described as focused on a particular genre- mystery or "thriller," but I for one am pleased to read it. I am female- and I admit that well written books in the Mystery category are a favorite of mine. My mother- who also likes thrillers/mysteries- and I joke that maybe there's something wrong with us, since death is a subtext. I sometimes think writers of these types of books don't get the respect they deserve-- as Pelacanos, Mosley, Ian Rankin, Ruth Rendell, Henning Mankell, just to name a few, are wonderful writers. Their work has depth and authenticity of character and plot-- I have found myself thinking about aspects of their work long after I finish reading. A good pairing of books: Pelecanos' Hard Revolution, and Walter Mosley's Little Scarlet-- both have urban, mostly black characters- living and working during the MLK, Jr days of the civil rights struggle. Plus 2 unforgettable main characters.
