"The Dead Hour"

When you're a cub reporter working the graveyard shift, there's little else to do than become involved in the domestic disputes -- and murders -- of Glasgow's upper class.

More about Mina

Denise Mina was a star long before Field of Blood. She is also the author of three previous crime books, including Garnethill, about a disturbed young woman trying to clear herself of a murder charge in low-life Glasgow. That book won the 1998 John Creasy Memorial Award for best first crime novel, and is knock-your-socks-off excellent. She followed up with Resolution, in which the same protagonist battles threats from a murderer, her abusive father and other assorted nastiness.

Mina's third novel, Deception, is about a man trying to prove his wife's innocence after her conviction for murder.

All of Mina's books are gripping, beautifully written and well worth wading in the depressing surroundings through which her characters struggle.
