The characters in those two panels remind me a great deal of Terry Moore's Katchoo and Francine from Stranger in Paradise. Wonder who saw who first?
Maggie is a character who's been around for nearly 25 years. It's laughable to suggest that Jamie Hernandez would need to steal anything from Terry Moore. A single panel of Jamie's work contains more artistry and nuance than all of "Strangers in Paradise" put together.
I have been reading Love and Rockets for 20 years and Maggie and Hopey are more real to me than some of my classmates I had in my high school that long ago. Jaime Hernandez is one of the most gifted & original American voices we have today. Thank God he came around, or else we might not get other greats like Dan Clowes, Adrien Tomine, or Jessica Abel.
