"The Little Stranger"

This astonishing novel by the author of "Tipping the Velvet" gives the traditional ghost story a creepy twist -- and a dose of class resentment.

The letters thread is now closed.

Tops all others on "to read" list

I can't wait to read this book. Waters is a delicious writer. Fingersmith is one of my all-time favorites. Couldn't put down her other books, either.

Holy crap, what a review!

Now I have to go and buy it. It goes on sale tomorrow at Indigo books. Thanks for the lead.

What an exquisite piece of writing!

Yes, now I want to read this book. I also want to read anything else I can find by Laura Miller. How nice to discover two gifted writers in a single reading experience.

compliments to Laura Miller

Hey there, I'm glad to see that the previous letter-writers appreciated Miller's review as much as I just did.

She's one of the two or three most compelling book reviewers I know of. She's certainly the only one whose reviews make me immediately think "Oh...I've got to buy this book" (although Ishould add that, in 2 cases, her reviews were considerably more interesting than the actual books).

In any case, I hope Miller gets large and regular bonuses.

Level best as Ever,

Just to pile on...

What a review! I now must go and find a book by Waters and read it while I wait for my library to put "The Little Stranger" on the shelves.

It isn't often

that a reviewer makes me want to rush out to buy a book, but I agree with the other posters, Laura Miller did just that. I can't wait to get my hands on this one. Thanks for the excellent piece Salon.

Laura Miller has led me to some of the best books in the last couple of years

Ms. Miller is a gifted writer (check out her book entitled The Magician's Book: a Skeptic's Adventures in Narnia) and a great reviewer. Whenever I see a new review by her, I feel a little twinge of anticipation. If only she could write a new one each week, but we can't have it all I guess. I'll be buying this book this afternoon.

Another book I HAVE to have

Laura Miller is costing me a bundle. Each time I read one of her pieces, I feel compelled to buy the book just to see if it is that good. So far, I haven't been disappointed, although I agree with the poster who said that her reviews are sometimes better than the book itself. Now I'm off to buy this book...

Just to REPEAT MYSELF AGAIN AND AGAIN?

I responded to one of Miller's reviews a few weeks ago by telling how I recently (within the past year or so)came into my old house, lugging bags of groceries and fending off the dogs...and I heard someone talking about books on NPR (I leave the radio on when I'm gone)....and I simply stopped when I thought "Wow....she's REALLY good..."

And, when they mentioned the guest-speakers, it turned out to be "Laura Miller, of Salon.com"

I hauled my ass through a BA, 2 M.A's, an M.Litt, and Duke's doctoral program in Literature.......and (these days?) Laura Miller's reviews are just about the only things that make me think "Oh...I've got to get this book and read it"

I'm sitting in a hotel room in Barcelona just now (2 in the morning), and I'm awfully glad to see that just about everyone else agrees with me concerning her reviews. It's VERY rare that we get reviewers who are this plain-damn-good.

I think Laura Miller should have both this column AND her own "book show" on NPR or some similar venue. Still?...my guess is that she'd rather just write extraordinarily well-written reviews.

Admiringly,

David Terry
