"When Will There Be Good News?"

Kidnapping, romance, comedy -- Kate Atkinson's delightfully inventive "When Will There Be Good News?" is much more than just another crime novel.

The letters thread is now closed.

Conspiracy?

Why is everyone trying to get us to read this book? And it's not just this book, it's other books like Phillip Roth's new book. The New York Times, Slate, Christian Science Monitor...they're all recommending this book! What the hell? Is there some kind of email blast that goes out, telling all the book critics to recommend certain books so that the amazon.com can make some money? Weird.

@ jgrh

I found it on Amazon.com for $16.

Kate Atkinson

I loved Case Histories, so based on this review I went directly to Amazon. Only to find out that the book reviewed is an import and was $100.00! Will it be released in the US soon?

Laura Miller has good recos

A while back Ms. Miller reviewed "The Likeness" by Tana French. So many people recommended Ms. French's first book, "In the Woods", so I got that first. I am a fast reader, can read books in one sitting. I strung this one out for 5 days because I did not want it to end. The Likeness is next on my list.

I read Kate Atkinson's, "Case Histories", so I will definitely check out this new one by her.

I agree with previous poster, more from Laura Miller!

Comparisons

I know there was a recent discussion, much of it unfavorable, about blurbs by authors on the back of books, but it would be helpful if Laura could compare books she reviews to those by others. For instance, it sounds like the hero of this latest Kate Atkinson book might usefully be compared to Ian Rankin's misanthropic Inspector Rebus.

In any case she has convinced me to go track down Kate Atkinson's works. Now where did I put that Borders coupon?

Great new feature!

I love the idea of a weekly book recommendation/review. Great idea!

Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite writers

I have all her books, and I'm thrilled that she has a new one out featuring Jackson Brodie. I savor every moment spent reading her fiction.

Thanks for this book review!

I will pick this up on the weekend.

I'm with you Gaimangirl - Laura Miller has turned me onto some of my favourite books these last few years, and I check out the books section every couple of days, often in vain, hoping to see a new review. We want more Miller!

Yes!

I adore Kate Atkinson's writing, and I thought this book was brilliant. Thanks for the great review!

Laura Miller's book reviews and literature features have always been my favorite aspect of Salon. Keep up the good work.
