    gay ex-Muslim here

As a gay man, I can tell you that growing up Muslim was a frightening and suffocating experience. Islam clearly condemns homosexuality, so I knew I could never come out and live my life honestly in that framework. Fortunately, I live in the U.S., so I was able to extricate myself from the Muslim community when I went away to college and have found a safe haven in San Francisco.

Gays and lesbians who live in Muslim countries do not have that privilege and must live in contant fear and shame. Many are forced into abusive marriages or end up killing themselves (or are killed by homophobic mobs). So much for a religion of peace, compassion, and mercy.

I wonder what Mr. Ramadan would have to say about that??
