my literature of exhaustion
It's very discouraging to me that this discussion has remained centered on religion and not on science in the bigger picture. Science always calls its critics religious because religion is an easy target. It has been for about 600 years. It becomes the ultimate straw man; assume that any critique of science is religious, then set about attacking religion. When you're done, declare the contest over and science as the one and only truth.
But the fact remains that there are considerable reservations to be had with Wilson (and his fellow devouts) worldview, reservations that have nothing to do with religion. I am not a conventionally religious person. I don't know whether or not I believe in God. What I do believe in is human failure. I believe in the fact that we evolved a consciousness which helps us to organize and maneuver through our world. But there is no reason whatsoever to believe that our consciousness is capable of perfectly and unfailing ordering the world. Man is incredibly fallible and will alway be so. And science is a product of mankind, something which we created. (yes, folks.) And so it can't be perfect. It can't and it shouldn't be expected to.
Here is what I want from scientists. The modern period in art, literary, visual, or otherwise, was in many ways about the failure of art. It was about recognizing the limits of the artist and his mediums. W.B. Yeats wrote that his poems began "in the foul rag and bone shop of my heart". The literature of the modern period is sometimes referred to as the "literature of exhaustion." Unable to continue with the charade that art should, or was capable of, offering an exact reflection of the fundamental matter of life, modern authors and poets wrote about their own limitation. In modern visual art you'll often see the term "the crisis of representation." Perhaps because of the advent of photography, painters and sculptors turned away from the production of accurately rendered physical things (...green and pleasant land...) and began to create things that were matter of factly not the way things were. Because even art failed.
I've always been a humanities person, as opposed to a science person. I have great respect for people who have the skills necessary to create science; I can't. Couldn't if I tried forever. But I'm also proud to be associated with the side that has learned to accept its limits--- and continues to create. I'd like to see the same from scientists, a recognition that science is a fundamentally human enterprise, and thus can't ever be called perfect. I guess I'd just like an injection of humility.

GOD is all the SCIENCES and all the ARTS! The Beginning & the End! The Reason for our existence! We, the Actors of the Play called the Big Picture! Written by God, long before the Big Bang occured!! Some play Devil, some Play God, Some are half God/half Devil!! Some are TRUE with a Soul and a Heart; some has to learn Taming their EGO; some are pure ROBOTS (Machines)! When they act like Animals!! (Saddam, the Taliban, Osama & friends... more recently!)
The Study of the Mind is considered Science (see YUNG!)! Buddhism studies the Mind and studies the Universe! It is already a Science! They also say: the World is Empty!! It is an illusion of our mind!! (/One more Trick of God!! that's from me) Go medidate on that!! But Buddhism is still snubbed by the Scientific World!!
Simply because Human Beings will never be able to compete with God's Magical Power, doesn't mean Magic is not also (a Higher) Science!
In all cases, God's Universe is much more exciting than all the Noise (you) all Arrogant Individuals are making!!!
And the Bible's Story is just one Angle of the Universal Truths!! Even its Flaws can be taken in consideration for whatever Messages they are Hiding!!! Once you understand that God has created Devil, our Job as Truth-seekers is to find Him wherever He Hides, Whenever He Talks or Express Himself, in order to reduce His Power or put Him at rest! I use to say the Bible is the Truth(God) explained by Devil(man)! The Quran is the the TRUTH of DEVIL!! written by Devil(man)! Ultimately all was written by the God Above who controls each & everything!!! It's a game! A scary game!! Personally I would prefer Eternal Death instead of even 5 minutes of Hell on Earth!!! Like the Hell Jesus went thru!! Since, unlike many victims, He was Real!!! And He could feel!! But in His Generosity, God can also use Magic & help Innocent Souls to swith Place (Reality) during their worst moments, like an out-of-body Experience! I wish this is what happened to Nick Berg!!! To Daniel Pearl!!... Like it did for Jesus!! But the Spiritual Pain remains & is part of the DNA of the soul! It was meant to be!!

Arrogant Individuals...sounds like we're blasphemers. Maybe we should be stoned! (insert joke here) Tell Par Robertson to send a hurricane or earthquake my way. Well, one thing's for sure. Fundamentalist rote-spewers get up about a half-hour before I do.
I just wonder who tipped off the freepers that there was a blog somewhere that needed their "help."

I shouldn't even bother to answer you! You are too stupid to be my Friend! Purifying has nothing to do with becoming a Priest or not (I am not a church goer)!! Don't get offended! It just means, being Honest with oneself, Transparent, Detached, Humble; Free from one's own Sick Mind, Ignorance, Tricks (Ego) etc.
...Never Lie to enslave others, use them, abuse them, Confuse them! Whether consciously or unconsciously! (even a Loving Possessive Mother can become our Jailer!!)
You can't be pure as long as you are a Coward!!! Susceptibility, Arrogance, Fear, Jealousy, Authority will stop your growth too!!! It takes a lifetime to get there! Quicker if you are Lucky!
