Nice!
Some timely reporting here. Good thing this Administration has been exposed before tens, if not hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians were killed.
-
I love Unger's writing, however ...
Self flagellation and mental masturbation is what it all amounts to at this point.
Holy Shit! Why'd Powell allow himself to be duped, and played by someone with half his intelligence? Why'd H.W. not speak up, force himself into the inner circle, grab that little shit and drag him behind the woodshed?
How could these people, these long standing public servants allow themselves to be used, knowing full well that their complicity would lead to deaths of American soldiers and innocent civians?
It's too damn maddening, and with each new book from Fiasco, to Cobra II, to It Could Happen Here to The Assault on Reason, and now this, a new layer of the onion is revealed. And with each new layer, more of the rotten core is revealed.
It's going to take a long, long time to undo this mess.

The Republican Crime Family
The Republican Party reminds me of organized crime when good people like Colin Powell are forced to go against their own better judgement.
Cheney plays the role of the crime boss. Libby and Powell both are victims of the Cheney Method, whereby Cheney lets others do his dirty work and he lets them take the fall. Powell must have had an easy decision to leave this Administration.
The really sickening part is the prostitution of the Christian Right. These idiots are willing to subvert anything in their drive to force their values down every Americans' throat.
Republicans wrap themselves in the Flag while they work to increase corporate profits at the publics' expense, defeat environmental protection legislation, and pretend to be fiscal conservatives while engaging in record spending.
The Democrats should have no problem painting this picture in order to assist voters to make the right decisions next Election.

neoconcubine
Wow, neoconcubine. Clever, but also so illuminating. The whole neocon rhetoric around liberating muslim women always made me queasy. So Riza was Wolfowitz's own personal allegory of neocon "love" for the Middle East. Some love. When he was caught making literal sweetheart deals for her (and thus for him) and it messed up his own hold on power, he turned on her in a flash. Unfortunately, the Middle East (like Wolfowitz's wife and Riza both) ends up getting screwed. Neoconcubine indeed.

When GOOD PEOPLE LIKE COLIN POWELL???? Perhaps you mean traitorous lying bastards like Colin Powell? Corrupt My Lai coverup artists like Colin Powell? Ballless cowards like Colin Powell - allowing himself to be pushed around by a fat old white man with a bum ticker. Pathetic.
Good people??? Tell that to the families of the 4,000 dead US soldiers and the 650,000 dead Iraqis. Powell has blood all over his carefully manicured hands.

Craig Unger is simply doing good muckraking journalism.
These Unger articles are greatly needed.
There are few other passionate journalist that could be mentioned. If Elvis Presley had not overdosed and died the way he did, he could have been the maladministration choice to be banker, butcher, and extramarital "neoconcubine" zipper down all the time wangler, whore chaser?
Elvis, with zipper down could be amb Cracker, joint-chief-Petraeus-Holy-Pot-smoker? Maybe sing: "Ya's ain't nothing but liberal hippies hound-dogs just crying all the time." O, replace the militarism marching band? Here comes Elvis, instead of, "Here comes the blind bride all about to cry?" Poor Clare, the one left with three children to care for...
I serious.
The guile.
The treason.
War criminals.
The worst dregs.
The gala receptions for tyrant guest visiting the pig-sty White House could hear Elvis blare (not Tony) and shake, rattle, and roll joints, instead of rum drinker Rumsfeld?
The "neoconcibine" farm pick-ups friends could go gathered up and hauled 'round the globe portending and pretending to be a neocon. Then: The lovely lady commences to gnaw off GOP member ears? Piglets do just that and fight over tater peels. eieio.
Oink.
In old days- if Chaney misspelled or don't love a clogged up Colin, and perhaps shot lawyers in the face? A lawyer will not accept a dunking donut bribe. Why apologize for getting shot by a Dick's Vice ilk?-~ a posse of Ladies were sent in the past to bite-off the lips of bloody war criminal lie-era's.

Captain Obvious Checking In...
Dick Cheney co-opted Bush's alleged "foreign policy" for two very basic reasons: (1) Bush was/is too stupid to understand the complexities, meanings and nuances of an actual foreign policy and (2) Cheney has been the de facto President since January, 2001, in any event.
Bush is a clueless and sad sock-puppet...no disrespect to competent sock-puppets intended.

Craig Unger is simply doing good muckraking journalism. These Unger articles are greatly needed."
No, they were greatly needed 4 to 8 years ago. If he were up for some good muckraking he'd be focused on Giuliani or Hillary.

Illumination
There's nothing like retrospective illumination seven long years after the fact. As I see it, there are two potential audiences for this piece: the Salon readership of the year 2000, and; the Republican faithful then and now. Too bad the latter isn't now and never will be interested in seeing their oxen gored. And as a Salon reader, I simply request that journalists, in this time of seemingly daily debates, ask meaningful questions of candidates NOW, not later, on issues foreign and domestic. Were it so, we might avoid articles such as this seven years hence.

'Nuff said: Put the scoundrels on trial for war crimes!
On reading Craig Unger's good - though very belated - article, I am led to ask again:
When would US citizens put this bunch of bloody murderers on trial for the war crimes they've committed? When will they impeach GW Bush and Dick Cheney??
If they don't do that, all who have not protested MUST be judged to be complicit in those war crimes.
(While commending Unger for his article, we must point out as one letter writer nicely observed: Colin Powell is by no means one of the 'good men' misled by this bunch of crooks).

Precisely. It's too late to save all those wasted lives, but it's not too late to prevent the whitewashing of Colin Powell.
Remember, never forget, tell your children and grandchildren every year on March 19:
"Colin Powell could have stopped the catastrophe that destroyed the United States, but out of pure cowardice and self-regard he chose not to. He is the greatest traitor in our history."
It cannot be repeated often enough.
