What happens when authors like J.K. Rowling can't stop telling their own stories?

  • Two more HP movies in production

It will be interesting to see how the revelation of Dumbledore's homosexuality plays out in the movies. It is my understanding that Rowling first "outed" him to one of the screenwriters, who had gotten something wrong about the character. I expect to see a more flamboyant Dumbledore in the remaining films, and hopefully an explicit reference to his homosexuality by the character himself.

That's where the outing of Dumbledore can have real significance.

  • how about salon readers being overly chatty about...

J.K. Rowling being overly chatty about ...

Hey, wait a minute! I'm one of them! (cue the twilight zone theme)

Then on the other end of the spectrum, there's "American Pie." We'll never know what all those darned lyrics stand for, and McLean ain't talking.

But it sure makes for interesting net fodder! A fact which Mr. McLean seems to have been well aware of. (in a figurative sense)

  • Other things we didn't need to know about --

-- Ron Weasley enjoys how women's silk underwear feels against his "wand"

-- Hermione Granger has a recurring yeast infection she can't "expelliramus"

-- Snape picks his nose a lot and brings what he finds to life

-- Voldemort has a "tramp stamp"

-- Harry Potter uses time travel so that he can chronically masturbate with no refractory period

    -- Hagrid enjoys golden showers

-- Luna Lovegood has genital Hogwarts

    -- Hedwig is a vegetarian

  • It's supposed to be a childrens story

and children are not interrested in sex (yuch!!!!). It's also disturbing in this post clergy abuse scandal ridden society that an elderly man in a robe should be mentor for a young orphan boy who would be a perfect target for such abuse. The stories she wrote are too long for most children to read themselves, and most parents would have to read them to their children. This new revelation is going to discourage families from reading the books. Dumbledore should have stayed in the closet. Sexually enlightened readers could still have appreciated their little secret and the rest of us could remain blissfully innocent.

  • @bfree4me

Oh the horror, parents read books with their children! That's what parents are supposed to do.

Plus I don't see how her statements made in an interview will discourage future families, unless they are so homophobic that the mere suggustion of a male/male relationship so subtle that most people didn't catch it or think about it; because it is a childrens book, will stop them from reading this series with their children. Oh well, not every person on the planet has to read Harry Potter.

Plus ncnGabriel, what I mean to say which you obviously didn't grasp is most people only read the book. Most people, especially if it's 20 years from now, may not go online to find out everything JK Rowling ever said about the characters in the book. Hence, they may not ever find out that Dumbledore is gay. If she felt it was important to have a gay character in her series, she could have put it in the book so someone doesn't have to go out researching it. If it wasn't for this article, I wouldn't have known that JK envisions Harry as Auror and Minister of Magic. I am able to ignore her because I don't know her and I don't spend all my time going to Potter websites, so what she says in some interview, is completely unimportant to anyone other than those fans who seek these tidbits out.

I don't look up what JK Rowling says about her characters, therefore what's in my imaginiation is all there is outside of the text. If this hadn't become a world wide news story, I would not know Dumbledore is gay, perhaps I would have picked up on it after future readings, or maybe not at all because I didn't consider the single adults sexuality. I simply don't sit around wondering if McGonagall and Madame Hooch are secret lovers. I've painted for a very very long time and one thing every instructor told us is you can explain the painting to everyone and not everyone is going to agree with you and you will both be right. You as the artist, them as the interpreter of the art.

  • Gimme a break lesbat

Everyone will remember that Dumbledore is gay. You miss the point. It's unnessassary and unwelcome information from the perspective of CHILDREN, to whom the book is marketted. Parents will not be interrested in inviting that issue into their homes. It's not enough that the world has to tolerate alternative lifestyles is it? No everyone must participate, the younger the better right? I'm not buying it. What you do in your bedroom is your business, don't make it mine. As for the children, can't you at least let them get old enough to stop choking on their toys before you insist they choke on yours?

  • Ooooh witty

Lesbat, ha ha ha. That was so funny, I'm astounded by your ability to showcase your wonderous affection for ribaldry and wit.

Gay people exist, just like straight people do. You weren't upset about all the teen snogging going on, but an interview about Dumbledore being gay is forcing homosexuality on your kids?

And no, not everyone for all time is going to go around talking about those Harry Potter books and how gay Dumbledore is.

It's like saying your kids shouldn't learn about Abraham Lincoln because there are a bunch of people convinced he was gay, someone even wrote a book about it. Don't let em know about Michelangelo and DaVinci either, someone might bring up what fags they were. Oh and that damn Picasso and his prostitutes, dying of syphillis, how ever will your precious children cope?

If you didn't know these things, then hooray, I've just shown you how it's possible that children years from now may never know Dumbledore likes men because it's not explicit in the book.

For someone who claims to like freedom, you are quite uptight. It's bad enough you have to be tolerant of gay people? Why wouldn't you, they are human, not murderers and rapists. Do you look at all your married hetero friends and think about what kind of sex they are having? Why are you so obsessed with the sex lives of other people? Why would you think that your child seeing a gay couple or hearing about gay people must include a sexual discussion, do you need to explain to them the type of sex their friends straight parents have?
