Science fiction promised us a tomorrowland of jetpacks, Smell-O-Vision and male mammary implants. So what happened?
  • The last line of the article nails it

It truly is the sociopolitical progress to which we must focus our attention. A culture and society which treats individuals as assets rather than commodities or even liabilities, will naturally foster an environment where the achievement of individuals is encouraged at the benefit of all.

I think about the technology available to us now, and I'm truly amazed, especially when one considers the advancements in medicine and communication. I look at medical technology and treatments from ten to fifteen years ago and am astonished at the advancements we have made in regard to medicine.

And who gives a damn about hovercars in comparison to the internet, which has allowed instantaneous global communication to become a reality? I'm still amazed that I can chat online in real time with friends in Europe, whom I never likely would have become acquainted with had it not been for technology.

We live in a time of great possibility, where our technological achievements have the potential to foster enormous positive changes for all of humanity. We have the capacity to develop green energy to combat the catastrophe of global warming. We have the capacity to treat and even eradicate diseases, as well as increase the quality of life for individuals throughout the globe.

The responsibility we now must accept is making choices which are beneficial for our global society. Our actions and choices are now too far-reaching to focus solely upon personal gratification.

When I think optimistically about the future, I imagine a world where there is a cure for AIDS, green and renewable energy, social equality and an improvement of life for individuals in impoverished circumstances.

And that's a hell of a lot better than a jet pack, don't you think?
