Letters to the Editor

This letter is associated with the following article:
The Christian right is a "deeply anti-democratic movement" that gains force by exploiting Americans' fears, argues Chris Hedges. Salon talks with the former New York Times reporter about his fearless new book, "American Fascists."
  • Disappointed

This interview is basically junk. I had high hopes that the piece would shed some light on where the Right is heading following the last elections, but I was disappointed to read that the Christian Right is plotting the overthrow of the Constitution because we lead "empty lives". There were some points made that I would accept as possible truths such as the rapidity in which a society can collapse as bad people start knocking on your door in the middle of the night, but to conclude that the Christian Right is plotting toward totalitarianism is patently ridiculous. Evidence provided by the article to support the author's argument that we are all idiots following even bigger idiots on Christian Right TV and megachurch pulpits because we lead "empty lives in Orange County CA" is ridiculous. The national economy has been operating at or near full employment for most of the last 10 years now, and there is and will continue to be a labor shortage in this country to the point where we are bringing in millions of undocumented and documented workers each year to meet the demand. If people don't have a life it's because they are working too hard and can never seem to escape work because of instant messaging, cell phones, and advances in technology.

I am not a member of any church but I assure you that the main points made in this piece are nonsense and typical "red meat" for the liberal base that lives on Salon. If the Left, including the New York Times and Salon, keeps putting out this kind of junk with such prominence, reasonable people like me will be very busy keeping everybody honest.
