A representative list
While it's possible to quibble with any year-end round-up (for instance, it's almost criminal that Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips' flawless crime book Criminal didn't show up here) I think this list is fairly representative of 2007, which saw a flood of very good original works as well as many amazing reprints. There's such a glut of quality material right now, with everything old that's worthwhile coming back into print, I don't know how retailers, critics or readers keep up. I certainly can't.
Backwards Man's complaint about including All-Star Superman in the list is misguided; Morrison and Quitely's comic is a wonderful, thoughtfully-constructed entertainment, and earns its place on any list of 2007's best comics. There's no need to segregate great comics from one another based merely on the presence of capes. Good is good; my Little Lulu reprints are quite comfortable on the shelf next to my Acme Novelty Librarys and From Hell. Separating out individual lists for superhero fans, hipsters, litcomix snobs, etc. is an exercise in bolstering artificial lifestyle distinctions that only encourage readers to avoid works they might otherwise enjoy.
