I am staying home, or driving

This last idiocy is the last straw, as far as I am concerned. I am lucky that I do not have to fly anywhere.

Vacation plans will center around driveable destinations.

I refuse to be herded as a sheep as passengers are today. And if I open my mouth to complain, I could be arrested. Ridiculous. So, I stay away. The airlines are the ones who are missing out on my business, and I am sure I am not alone.

Are there just no real journalists in this country anymore?

I was at the march on Saturday and am sadly and nauseatedly disappointed by the lack of actual coverage by the press.

What was the real story there? Certainly not that Jane Fonda and the other celebrities and fringe groups showed up to speak and try to be heard.

The real story was that Americans took to the streets to voice their unhappiness with the government's uneccessary and costly war and demand that the war be brought to an end. And that with a significant majority of Americans of like mind, our elected officials are failing to act.

This is the first time I have ever done anything like this. A middle aged physician, mother of two, from Washington State, I decided I had to try to do something to end this war, besides lurking on blogs and calling my congressman's office. I brought my 15-year-old daughter along as well for a civics lesson. On the plane to Washington DC there was an attorney who had felt the same way and another group who were also going to the march.

The number of protesters has been reported as a lazy "tens of thousands" to about 100,000 or more. I know that the crowd extended around both sides of the capital. Where were the large crowd pics in the news? What about some attempt at an analysis of the real issues? Who are these people (and no, anarchists and fringe groups were not the defining categories)? How did it come about that normal, regular Americans would do this?

I believe that the focus of the press on easy, "sound-bite" issues and its failure to hold our elected officials accountable for their lies could be the downfall of this country.

"Unwilling to negotiate" with reality!

This is really too much.

You, "unwilling", have just revealed yourself to be utterly deceived by the RNC talking points, and so your opinions are based on fiction.

Scepticism and critical thinking are two attributes which are sadly lacking in most of these ditto-head posts. I, for one, am getting tired of hearing the old falsehoods continually rerun, and as if they were true. It annoys me that people can be so intellectually lazy and yet feel they have something to add to the discourse.

My advice to you and your ilk: Read (and listen) more widely. Think before you open your mouth or start typing on your keyboard.

"No more organized effort at medical ethics"?

Ms. Johnson, if you don't think an ethics committee comprised of 18 professional and community members who took the time to hear out Ashley's parents, meet her, and spend at least 2 hours in discussions of her case not an organized effort, I can't imagine what would be. Did you even think about what you wrote?

As a physician, I think Ashley's parents should be commended for taking the necessary steps to safeguard their daughter against a number of dangers. Primarily the one of becoming too physically large for them to care for, and hence having to be cared for by a steady stream of strangers. The difficulties inherent in developing a fully sexually mature body in the setting of a hopelessly infantile mind has been avoided as well. Now, she need never experience sexual assault, pregnancy, menstrual cramps, and has no need of invasive, frightening screening tests. I applaud her caregivers' creativity and courage.

As for the "slippery slope" thinkers, better hope that if you or your loved ones are ever in even remotely similar situations the decision makers are more open-minded, rational, and logical.

This is just another case where people who have no standing to comment on a situation feel they have a right to chime in. I call it "Fristian medicine" and it should be stopped in its tracks.

Susan Fitzmaurice: Are those signers of the statement volunteering to help care for her?

Regarding the "statement" signed by all those "ethicists" (my emphasis on the latter): Have they also signed up to take turns to help Ashley's parents deliver the care she needs, or found a similarly impared person in their community to help in such a way? It is so very easy to plunk a signature on a form registering distaste for someone else's actions. But putting your money and time on the line for your beliefs takes more committment.

But the reality of Ashley's care needs must be crushing. And all the nattering naysayers here and elsewhere haven't a CLUE what that entails. And until these people can stand up and show how they have contributed in a concrete way (hours of respite care donated, etc.,) they should STFU, IMO

You can go on all you want about "feminist issues", "disabled issues" and "rights of children", blah, blah, blah, but in the end it all boils down to a little vulnerable being whose world is just familiar faces, sounds, smells and touches, and her parents who love her and have committed to care for her as long as they can. These procedures have ensured that that can happen. It isn't' any more sinister than that.

REAL JOURNALISM PLEASE!!!!

I am so tired of hearing these idiotic "character" pieces about the candidates. Can't you be just a little different and do some actual analysis of the ideas Obama has and, maybe, how they related to the other candidates who are running? So, maybe, the voters might have some actual useful information.

If I wanted to read People, I would have gotten a subsciption.

Shame on you.
