The desperation of Texas democrats to have some say in the presidential election illustrates the major problem with the Electoral College. Texas democrats will not have any voice in the general election, and it will be extraordinarily frustrating for those folks. The system isn't going to be easy to change, given entrenched political interests, but the state-by-state approach is simply not representative enough.
It may be that the school that is farther north is in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The winters up here longer than some, but don't just judge a US city by its proximity to Canada. The Twin Cities are in fact a great place to live, fun with lots of interesting things to do, although they might not be for you because of the other reasons in your letter.
Does sound like a midlife crisis. He probably still loves you, but he is lost. Cary's letter wanders about, probably because it is extremely hard to make suggestions without knowing the particulars of your relationship. I would guess that your husband does not perceive his daily life positively and that he doesn't see the future bringing substantial changes. Each day is grey, but isn't life supposed to be in color? He may have been thinking about this for some time, and the thoughts simply wore him down. What to do? Well, certainly seeing a marriage counselor is an excellent idea, but your husband probably needs to figure out which way is up for himself as well and suggesting seeing a therapist on his own isn't a bad idea. Note that not all marriage counselors know what they are doing, so keep that in mind during your sessions. In your interactions with your husband, I would suggest being firm, but do not push him away (don't start dividing the assets), as that will definitely not help. You are likely in for a rough year, try not to despair.
The Idiot we call President will not be president forever. While the insanity will persist after he is out of office, it may fade over time, and we will again be able to travel back from Canada without a blood sample or fingerprinting.
There has been far too little mention of his family, in particular, his mother. Those of us who have lived in Texas know a bit more. Rick Perry is the current governor of the Lone Star state, and has been since W left for DC. Since becoming Governor, he has been reelected twice, the second time in a three-way race. The independent in that race was C.K. Strayhorn, who argued that Perry wasn't fiscally responsible (he's not) nor conservative (not that either). Strayhorn has a long political career in Texas, last as Comptroller, a important position in Texas. She was elected as a Republican. McClellan's mother has a backbone. Maybe Scott found his, or at least borrowed his mother's.
Marketing.
Great taste, less filling.
Double your flavor, double your fun.
It's the real thing.
More bars in more places.
Tempest in a Teapot.
Yeah, it looks great but its not getting on my computers. The DRM is way too nasty for me, no way I'm letting a game take control of my computer. The three install max limit is absolutely nuts.
It is a funny article, an article about DRM that doesn't mention the labels. The labels? Yeah, the companies that have pushed and enforced DRM schemes
Sin by omission.
The most likely goal of this attack on Science is to kill/reduce basic science funding.
A long time ago, in something of a different lifetime, my now wife and I had dinner with Mr. Disch. Just the three of us. It was a very nice, bizarre dinner. I couldn't figure out how the man I was talking with was the same man who had written the most depressing SF I had yet encountered. That's youth.
You have a very good list, but without this Danny Kaye classic, it is a two-legged stool.
Vessel with the pestle has the pellet with the poison. No the flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true.
There is life between the coasts, most of which is primordial ooze. Not true for the Twin Cities, which is a great place to live. Isn't apparent that you've ever even visited, given the reference to the 'Minnesota drawl'.
It is amoral for the FBI to have hounded the two government scientists, based upon the evidence that has been released. While the scientists research was unusual in comparison to most microbiology work, that alone is not sufficient cause to start ruining lives.
I would have guess that TR knew how to dress a moose.
As an occasional reader of Paglia columns, I always wonder what she has been drinking immediately prior to writing them. They appear to come from an alternate reality. Attractiveness takes the place of intelligence, argument takes the place of reason.
Just because you have an opinion, doesn't make it right. Or convincing.
It is rather easy to just say "Let Detroit Fail, the economy will be better in the long run", but living in the here and now might not be so wonderful.
This column is by someone who likes to make a splash and rub your nose in something. Content is important, but secondary, to being flashy splashy. Imagine a English Dept. faculty meeting, and Ms. Paglia's arrival. What would it be like: this column.
The loss of all the jobs is going to be huge drag on the US economy, sending it in exactly the wrong direction. In hindsight, this lack of some sort of support for Detroit will look just as foolish as disbanding the Iraqi Army. In principle, both have merit. In actuality, both are insane.
