I'm just a rank and file Democrat, nowhere near the famous pundit James Carville, but I can tell him that people like me who donate in $25 dribs and drabs love Howard Dean. We supported him for president until the media destroyed his chances, we love the way he extended the party to everyone, not just the James Carvilles and Terry McAuliffes. James Carville is what's wrong with the party—sitting on the dais at CNN with William Bennett, married to Mary Matalin. Howard Dean's Democrats really care about what's happening to this country; they really want to make things better for the working people. It's not a game.
I ran into Howard Dean recently on a crowded subway platform in New York during the morning rush. He was traveling alone, without any froofraw. I was the only person who recognized him. And when I told him how I thought he was doing a great job he was gracious and friendly. This is the kind of country I want—where politicians travel by subway and the majority's wishes are consulted. Stay at CNN James.
Cave men used to drag women around by the hair; white men used to buy and sell black men at auction; foodies stuff food down animals' throats so rich people can eat food that's bad for them. Times change. People become more civilized, which means they are more sensitive to the feelings of others. As an animal owner and lover, I can swear to the fact that animals feel pain just like we do. Let outspoken foodies Anthony Bourdain and Michael Ruhlman sound off all they want. I, and lots of people like me including my children and all their friends (the next generation), will continue to fight for the rights of animals to be left in peace.
For the animals,
Alexandra Simon
I am just glad that you are highlighting the pathetic response of the MSM to Stephen Colbert. I feel like we're in Russia passing around samizdat that's written in a language that the media doesn't understand. Who cares if he was funny anyway? I don't want to laugh. I want the politicians and the media and everyone else to realize what trouble we're in and stand up and do something.
I am so glad that Salon exists. Keep it up.
Watching Stephen Colbert yesterday (thank you, Salon) was just the catharsis I needed. To live in this world today is so depressing. To have a president who not only can't speak English but is proud of it, a country that wiretaps us and bombs others indiscriminately, a press corps full of simpering idiots who never raise issues other than Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise—it's all just too much. Salon is the only publication that continues to be political, a voice in the wilderness. And now Stephen Colbert. Before the election I watched Jon Stewart faithfully but lately I've been off tv. If I have to watch one more smiling newscaster I may throw something at my tv and my kids will be upset.
Anyway, thank you Stephen Colbert, for throwing cold water on all those stuffed shirts who think they are so hip and who are driving the world to the brink of extinction. May this be the first salvo in the campaign to take our country back from the pompous boors.
