[Read the article: What we missed this week (McKinney, mostly)]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have encountered those Capital security guards (police) and I can tell you they are as mean as rattlesnakes. When I tried to visit the Capital a few years ago, I accidentally tried to go through the "official" entrance line. (I just thought it was shorter and faster moving, silly me.) One of those guards grabbed me and pulled me back very rudely. When I tried to ask what was wrong, she just grabbed me harder. Very embarrassing. All she had to say was "Ma'am, this line is for congresspeople." Too hard, I guess.

  • "bad writing"?

[Read the article: A pit bull killed her dog and now she's lost to me]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hey Cary, I read your column because I think you give good advice, but also (perhaps mainly!) because I like the way you write. So don't let that lady in your writing class make you crazy. I've taken more writing workshops than any living person, and I can tell you that a lot of "crit" is really stupid. Overall you can learn something but pick and choose. You know the story about teaching a centipede how to walk? (My favorite crit of one of my stories was "Take out the murder- suicide." Think about it.)

    Keep up the good work.

  • Maureen and Hilllary

[Read the article: The nag, the witch and the media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maureen Dowd won her Pulitzer for smearing Bill Clinton. For months, every day in the NYT there was something smarmy about "Monica." So now she's turned on Hillary. I like Maureen's writing and often her politics, but what's with the Dowd-Clinton thing? Maureen, there's plenty else to write about. Use your considerable gifts and write about the other rascals in the race.

[Read the article: Dowd: Are (Hillary's) women necessary? ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Thank you thank you thank you! I have had to stop reading Maureen (blood pressure!) The last hateful column nearly did me in. I wish Maureen would use her considerable skills to talk about something (someone) else once in a while.

  • No to Bible camp!

[Read the article: Our kids want to go to Christian summer camp]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

My mother tricked me into going to Bible Camp when I was 12 and it was a horrible experience. Details on request. Do not trust those folks who promise that it won't be a scary indoctrination. It will be. And they are scary. Grandma is trying to bribe you.

There are other "church" camps the children could go to, run by regular mainstream denominations: Lutheran or Methodist, Catholic or Jewish, for example. But those evangelical "camps" are child abuse. Listen to me, a voice crying in the wilderness!

Better still, go to a non-church camp!

  • baby or not?

[Read the article: We want a kid but don't think it's right to have one]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Oh, have pity on these folks. The "Green" movement has warped their minds. In the Old Times, before the Pill, we just had children by accident. This wasn't a better system, in so many ways, but at least we didn't have time to obsess over the decision. It was made for us. And we got busy and raised the children.

Many of us would have "chosen" not to have children. Think about that, snotty teenagers.

My answer to "I didn't ask to be born" is: Oh, yes you did. Let them think about it.

  • Oh Mom, Poor Mom

[Read the article: Does Hillary Clinton remind you of your mom?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Women who say (in a very mean, snippy way) that Poor Hillary reminds them of their Mom--should maybe sit down and think about it. If they feel that way, maybe they should keep it to themselves. Very disrespectful to the gal who changed their poopy diapers, wouldn't you say?

(My grown children are more respectful, at least to my face.)

I loved this. Thanks for writing it.

  • Indiana vote

[Read the article: What should Hillary Clinton do now?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Not to beat a poor dead horse, but: The Indiana Primary was held just a few days after the Supreme Court decided that voters needed to show a government-issued photo ID. And the "law" was put into effect immediately. A group of elderly nuns was turned away from the polls, for one example. Maybe H would have gotten a larger vote? Just a thought. I'm resigned to having O for the democratic candidate. I'm not resigned to the misogyny that continues.

  • Vegan Vet student

[Read the article: I want to be a veterinarian but not at the expense of animals ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Veterinary student who doesn’t want to study “food animals” should read Temple Grandin’s “Animals in Translation.” Grandin is an autistic person (“Asperger Syndrome”) who is a professor of animal science and a professional designer of “humane” slaughterhouses. A fascinating book.

I would say that that student should just suck it up and take the class. I remember a story I read about a woman who takes a job in a research lab and discovers that part of her job is that she has to kill the lab animals. She complains to her husband: “I have to kill rats.” He says, “We all have to kill rats.”

[Read the article: I want to be a veterinarian but not at the expense of animals ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    1) Read Temple Grandin's book, "Animals in Translation."

    2) I read a short story where a woman took a job at a research lab and discovered that part of her job involved killing ("sacrificing") rats. When she got home she complained to her husband: "I have to kill rats." He responded, "We all have to kill rats."

  • nastry responses

[Read the article: Big weekend news]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Don't be discouraged by some of those "satanic" responses. Some people have too much time on their hands.

You are keeping me sane, Joan.

[Read the article: The other 18 million]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Thanks Joan, you are keeping me sane.

I will vote for Obama in November because I am a Democrat. But I am still angry as hell.

  • lonely?

[Read the article: Why can't I find a relationship that will last?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Great advice, Cary. I finally relaxed and became myself when I stoppped trying to find someone to marry. Suddenly the world opened up! I could do stuff I couldn't when I was busy looking for a husband. I became friends with a Catholic priest. I took a two-year Fulbright in Africa. Much later, I did marry, to a man (a widower) I had known for 25 years. Life is surprising, if you let it be.

  • where are the men?

[Read the article: Are Democrats backpedaling on abortion rights?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Every abortion involves a man, somewhere. Why is this always posed as a "woman's" issue?
