  • McCain's Problem - Actions vs Words

[Read the article: More bad news for McCain on Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The big problem McCain has with his Iraq policy is that his actions don’t support his words. If the surge was such a huge success then he should be working to bring our soldiers home or redeploy them to actually go after Bin Laden. The fact that McCain refuses to consider a time line and says we will leave when conditions on the ground permit it completely contradicts the idea that the surge was such a glorious success. The American people have had enough of this.

This war was won years ago when Saddam was deposed. We are now in an occupation and you don’t win or lose occupations, you just end them. Would McCain rather end an occupation or win an election? It makes you wonder but then….. there is the oil. Oops. Sorry. Mentioning oil is not allowed in any debate on Iraq.

If you didn’t then you should. Though the title claims that the Democrats don’t want to lower gas prices the article itself quoted nothing of the sort from the Democrats. The Democrats realize, as most Americans do, that we need to move away from oil and that drilling off our coasts or in ANWR will have little to no effect.

    T. Boone Pickens, who has forgotten more about the oil industry than most of us will ever know, realizes that we can’t “Drill our way out of this problem”. If you haven’t seen it yet then check out his latest video on YouTube.

  • Surge = Counterinsurgency?

[Read the article: McCain digs himself in deeper]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Duh… well let’s see… the word “surge” is in the word counterinsurgency so maybe the surge is part of the counterinsurgency.. or does that still mean that the counterinsurgency is part of the surge? John McCain must be right because he knows way more about this stuff than we do right? Unbelievable.

By the way… The “Awakening” was nothing more than the Sunni Sheiks waking up to the fact that they could extort a bunch of money from Bush to stop attacking US soldiers. Could this be appeasement on a grand scale? No wait… My bad… The word “appeasement” is not in the word “Awakening”. I must be wrong.

    Sigh…..

  • Obama – Disappointing but..?

[Read the article: The parade of "shrill, unserious extremists" on display at today's impeachment hearings]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I must admit it has been disappointing watching Obama become more and more a part of the standard beltway establishment as he moves though the campaign cycle. What others sometimes refer to as a shift to the center I tend to look at as more of a sell-out especially after his capitulation on Fisa and the recent comments by Sunstein. Its starting to make his call for change sound almost as ridiculous as McCains’s “Straight Talk Express”.

I don’t think that this country and our democracy has been in such bad shape since the Great Depression so I did a little research on the 1932 election where FDR defeated Hoover and it gave me a some hope. During this election the country was trying to recover from the depression and was desperately in need of change. Every time Hoover pronounced that the depression was at an end things got worse. Despite the bleak state of the country Hoover tried to convince people that FDR would be worse.

From a Wikipedia article on the subject:

In contrast, President Hoover was widely blamed for the Great Depression; for more than two years Hoover had been issuing statements that the worst was over, only to have the economy make further downturns. Hoover's attempts to publicly campaign were a disaster, as he often had objects (especially rotten fruit and vegetables) thrown at him or his vehicle as he rode through city streets. In his addresses, Hoover attacked Roosevelt as a dangerous radical who would only make the Depression worse by raising taxes and increasing the federal debt to pay for expensive welfare and social-relief programs. However, with unemployment at a record 33%, Hoover's criticisms failed to gain traction with the public.

Can you believe the part about throwing rotten fruit? That would get you into Gitmo faster then anything!

Though talking about change and a new deal for the American people FDR remained vague about the details hoping to not appear as too radical even though this was what the country needed. After the election was a different story and his policies were so popular with the average American the he won in a walk in 1936.

I hope Obama wins the election. I hope he turns out to be a real agent for change and justice. I also know that when you pin your hopes on a politician they will almost always break your heart.

  • And the song remains the same….

Of course Jackson Diehl is appalled by the law breaking of the Russian government. This law breaking is directed towards corporations and more importantly oil companies. If Medvedev was directing his law breaking efforts against ordinary citizens as the Bush administration does we might not see so much indignation from Jackson Diehl or the Washington Post. By the same token, and I am delving into fantasy here, if the Bush Administration engaged in illegal activities against corporations or oil companies The Washington Post would rise to the task as a defender of the rule of law.

  • To KARENN22 - Beware the word OIL....

You have used the word "Oil" as have a few us of in this thread. I think we have reached the maximum allowed use of this word as it is generally not allowed in any discussions about foreign or domestic policy. Although it is the overriding factor that got us into Iraq and it drives most of the geo-political problems today mentioning the very word is taboo.

So let’s get this out of our system now… Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil Oil… whew… that felt good.
