  • Maybe they don't know what links are ?

I stopped reading Bill O’Reilly’s column years ago because it was too time consuming to research. One noted difference between right wing blogs and other blogs that I have observed is their diminished use of links to any sources for their material. Now keep in mind that this is just an impression and I am sure there are right wing bloggers out their that are transparrent about their sources and research material but in general I find that is not the case. When you scan down a GG post it is full of links to source material. Guys like Bill-O on the other hand seemed challenged on this point.

Check out this latest from Bill-O…

Aside from the fact that he mentions doing some research what that research was is anybody’s guess. Folks that live in the right-wing blogosphere might not know what those “blue” characters mean.

Just a thought. Keep up the good work Glenn.

  • As Forrest Gump might say: Torture is as torture does.

[Read the article: Here's what waterboarding looks like]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I think the bottom line here is that if Michael Mukasey, Bill O Reilly, Rudy Giuliani, or I were exposed to waterboarding we would ultimately sign a confession saying we masterminded 9/11 and we would give up the names of anyone we could think of as conspirators. The technique is torture and the result is useless.

  • "Search and Avoid", a strategy that works.

I am always pleased when the number of American and Iraqi casualties goes down during any period of time. It is amazing how any down tick in violence brings out the proclamations that we are winning and we were right, accompanied by the slur that war protesters delight in US casualties and hate it when things start to go well. I read an article back in October that could suggest that our soldiers are taking matters into their own hands and responsibility for their own safety. This could be a big factor in the recent decline in casualties. The article is from the Asia Times and you can read it here.

The article suggests that our soldiers are doing what many military experts suggested they should be doing all along. Redeploying to a safe distance and just moving in where there is trouble. It is impossible to say how prevalent these “Search and Avoid” missions are from this one article and I generally don’t support the idea of a soldier disobeying orders but given the incredible incompetence of our leadership in Iraq it is good to see our soldiers looking out for themselves. No one else seems to be.

  • Scary Stuff...

Maybe Huckabee looked into Wayne's eyes and "..was able to get a sense of his soul".

  • The Title of Glenn's Article?

[Read the article: Jihadis throw a wild bash over the Protect America Act]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

When I first saw the title of Glenn's article, "Jihadis throw a wild bash over the Protect America Act" I assumed the Jihadis were celebrating the vote in the Senate. The goal of a terrorist is to cause a society to redefine itself out of fear. Bush has been delivering the Jihadis one victory after another since 9/11.

  • Was this warrant less eavesdropping program in place before 9/11?

[Read the article: Jihadis throw a wild bash over the Protect America Act]

I hope that some of the well informed contributors to this comment thread know the answer to this. I have heard that the answer might be yes. I believe that such a program was contemplated almost the moment Bush took office. If the answer is yes then one really has to wonder how the attacks of 9/11 could have ever taken place and what the real purpose of this program might actually be.

  • Thanks Bystander

Thanks for the information outlining the strong possibility that this spying program was a pre-9/11 program. If it was, one has to wonder what in the world it was being used for given the warnings that Bush received before 9/11.

Without warrants there are no records and without records there is no audit trail or accountability. Given the almost zombie like quality of the support Bush’s most controversial programs get from both sides of the aisle and from the media one has to wonder if this spying program was focused more on Tom Delay’s desire for a permanent majority than it was on national security. Did somebody steal a page from the J. Edgar Hoover play book ?

  • For their decisions to have been bad we must first lose.

[Read the article: War advocates like Anne-Marie Slaughter demand that you forget the past]

Amateur gamblers sitting at the table and down a thousand dollars instinctively feel that the money is not lost until they walk away from the table. Casinos around the world make a fortune on this mentality. An experienced professional gambler knows otherwise. When you are down a grand you are down a grand. It is already lost money and the only decision to be made is how much more are you are willing to risk.

Inexperienced investors will not feel like they have lost money on a stock that has lost value until they sell it. Experienced investors know that the money is lost and the real question to ask is “If I didn’t already own the stock would I buy it?”

It is this emotion that the pro war establishment banks on to hide their incompetence and protect their reputations. They do not want us to feel that anything has been lost until we decide to walk away from the table. In this way their decisions were not bad because we have not yet lost and they are set up to label the persons who have the courage to get us out of this occupation as the losers deserving of our scorn.

Unfortunately we are not talking about poker chips and stock investments here. Our loss is measured in human lives, a disintegrating Constitution and a crumbling economy. We endure this endless loss just to protect the legacy of a corrupt administration and its merry band of enablers. What we need now is new leadership that can make courageous decisions. What we don’t need are the cowards we have now who are too terrified to admit their mistakes and walk away from the table while we still have a country.
