Original article: The veggie burger diet scam

Jesse

Thanks for your post. I thought it was very insightful. It also give me an idea of why my veganism seems to bother people so much.

I am a 3:30 marathoner (getting ready for Boston next week!) and have been vegetarian since a very young age; vegan for about 10 years (I am 35).

My main reasons for going vegetarian are that I just don't like meat. I am LAZY and it takes a lot of effort to chew. Plus, who wants to worry about eating undercooked meat?

It was easy to go vegan b/c I am lactose intolerant (although like a lot of vegans, I tend to not ask too many questions about what went into a baked good!).

Now, I find that my veganism is a perfect excuse to avoid socializing with others, since so many people like to do socializing over food. Did I mention I am a misanthrope, too?! Personally, I could care less what other people eat or don't. But if it gets me out of interacting with other people, I'm all for it!

WHY???

Why are we trying to promote fertility?? The world has enough people already, thanks! Infertility is Mother Nature's way of putting the brakes on rampant population growth and one should not f*ck with Mother Nature.

CREEPY!

The whole father - daughter thing is just... ICK!

As for pigs... they are some of the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom, in addition to being pretty damn cute. I would be honored to be called a pig!

What Works....

Back in the '80's, we saw something similar to that "Miracle of Life" video. Between that and my parents being extremely open about sex, I was just NOT INTERESTED! Because really, when you're a teenager, you do not want to be doing what your parents are doing. It was a fantastic way to ensure that your teens would definitely remain abstinent!

Based On Use

If women have expensive pregnancies, they should be charged more. As long as I (a female) am able to purchase a cheaper policy that doesn't cover pregnancies, I'm fine with that. I'm not interested in subsidizing the breeders. As far as seeing the doctor more, one would think that paying for preventive care would end up costing less down the road.

@ Leeandra Nolting

I don't want to pay for their kids, either! People who have kids should pay substantially more than people who don't. It goes back to use. If I'm covering one person, it should be cheaper than covering multiple people.

And maybe if those people had to pay more, they'd think twice before polluting the world with more people, who we don't need anyway.

There SHOULD Be Pregnancy Discrimination

News flash - unemployment is over 8%. There are plenty of non-breeders who can do that pregnant woman's job without all the time off and attendant baby drama.

Also, as a non-breeding woman, I feel like any potential employer is going to look me over b/c I "might" get pregnant.

I Believe It!

My hubby and I eat about 95% of our meals at home. We don't eat processed food or take out.

We eat virtually the same amount each day. He weighs 225 and I weigh 110. The only thing I do different from him is run 40 miles a week and strength train 4x a week.

He would have to starve himself to lose weight, which I feel would be less healthy than what he is doing now, despite being overweight.

Two Separate Issues

This may be slightly off topic, but Berlusconi's conduct in his marriage is entirely separate from his ability to govern. I have no idea what his politics are like, or what he is doing for his country, but his behavior towards his wife and / or mistresses should have no bearing on that.

I was outraged that the puritanical Americans forced Spitzer out of office, and the reaction to Clinton (Bill) was wildly overblown.

I don't know if the president of my company is an a$$hole to his wife and kids, if he cheats with the nanny, or if he uses call girls and goes to strip clubs in his free time... because that takes place in his FREE TIME! As long as he's not doing any of that while he's at work, who cares??

We hire and elect people on their ability to do the job for which they are applying / running, and nothing else.

Me, Too!

re: The 25 year old letter writer who can't find a doctor to tie her tubes.... me neither, except I'm 35. I have offered to sign all sorts of releases, no dice. My doctor feels that being on hormonal birth control after the age of 35 is safer than making a choice I may regret. As if me adding my DNA to the current population of 6 billion is so freaking important.

You Can't Always Get What You Want

Guess what, life's not fair! Some people will not be able to have children with their own DNA unless they can foot the bill themselves. Everyone in this country is not entitled to everything they want.

Plus, think of what this legistlation would do to premiums for ALL women, regardless of whether or not they even WANT to have children.

Utterly ridiculous!

Svutlov

Actually, I'm a straight female, so no, I cannot recall a time when a woman has had an orgasm with me.

But funny you bring that up b/c I always thought you were a woman! So looks like we've had our gender bending for the day!

Anyway, maybe I'm just too serious, but I've always felt that sex is for horny teenagers, drunken college kids, and yuppies "trying to conceive"... no thanks!
