@Anonymous

What's the point? The point is not getting onto the merrygoround credit nightmare, mainly. I had ONE credit card about 20 years ago, had a devil of a time getting rid of it and vowed I would never have one again. A debit card gives you access to YOUR money, rather than a loan at some ridiculous interest rate.

And in these days of credit scams and identity theft, debit cards are far safer than credit cards, as any thief would only be able to take the amount that happens to be in your account at the time. That's how I do my online transactions, with a bank account specifically for online payments, and a debit card connected to it. I transfer enough money to that account for each transaction, leaving a bit for a buffer, and thus do not risk being scammed for any more money than I can afford.

As to the subject of the OP, I don't understand why anyone uses ATMs at all. If I need some cash, I just stop by a supermarket or other store, pick up some item I need and get my cash with my debit card there. No charge for the transaction and perfectly convenient. More so, because by combining the errands, I catch two birds with one net. By comparison, paying money to withdraw money seems silly to me.

Too short

Way too short. Should have had at least another 10 clips in it.

For a near perfect mix of visuals, music, mood and foreshadowing, what about Twin Peaks? Also, the credits for Rome - fantastic concept, stunning execution, and it summed up the character of the show about as well as I've ever seen it done.

And of course Green Acres goes without saying. Just remember, it's not goofy, it's surreal!

Original article: Lee Bollinger's big moment

@meffert

I could not agree more. All through the long debacle beginning with the 2001 attacks, this country has gotten itself into a mess worse and worse by refusing even to try and understand those on the other side, even to the extent of how to treat guests.

Earlier today I watched through the online hookup, but missed the opening remarks. Now I'm glad I did, because I would have been more than a little pissed to see a visiting head of state invited to an American university and then publicly derided. It's not just Middle Eastern hospitality he's violated, it's hospitality, period. It's an ugly thing to do, without question, given that I'm pretty damn sure Bollinger didn't let Ahmedinejad in on the substance of his opening remarks.

It's just another example of the boorish nature of our dealings these days. We just keep insisting on proving what unpleasant, hostile people we are.

Re: Springsteen's FBI file.

Hell, dude, he got one of those during the Reagan administration. Don't you remember how pissed he was when The Great Prevaricator used his name in a pathetic attempt to scrape up some street cred? I'm sure he's been on the books ever since.

So it's economic

So what?? Social changes don't always happen for pure political reasons, you know. If economic forces succeed where social pressure does not, it's still success. The day that law changes, I doubt many Saudi women will be sitting at home fretting over their leaders reacting more to economics than to political petitions. They'll be happily taking advantage of their new freedom while looking forward to the next challenge, which will doubtless come up quickly, seeing as how their driving will create, domino-style, more areas of freedom that will have to open up for them.

Try not to insist that every other country do things the way you want for exactly the same reasons you have. The world is a complicated place, and you can't have everything.

Speak for yourself, Joan

I'm a Democratic female and I don't trust Hillary Clinton as far as I could toss her. None of the other Dem women I know trust her either. Not for the idiotic reasons that Dowd coughs up, but nonetheless...

As for that laugh, I'm sorry but I don't much like it either. The way she starts so suddenly, loudly braying makes her sound awfully derisive and condescending, which is one of the reasons I don't like her. She's far too pedantic when she talks to people, sounding like her audience are all sixth-grade students and she has a thing or two to say to them! And it hardly behooves a candidate to sound like the person she's talking to is not to be taken seriously.

Tacking to the right after tacking left? Only in a political structure twisted beyond recognition could that vote be seen as "left". In a sane world, it would just be logical.

A little more info please?

Andrew, you mentioned that "most" of the CFL's sold in the US come from China. Considering that your news is rather discouraging, how about helping your readers by letting us know where we can get CFL's that aren't made in China? That way we could be sure we're buying American in this regard.

Anybody got any info on that?

Genderless Ally McBathrooms

Cute.

I like the sound of that. There's no reason toilets couldn't be unisex, if the stalls were truly private. And that whole peeing-in-a-trough thing that guys do doesn't have to be in community either. (I mean, unless they want to.) Seems like an easy fix; you'd just have to have the public will to do it, which is another matter, and not one so simple as the building design.

Ah hell

Men actually would stand in 2 Bloomingdale's bags so that no one would suspect there are 2 men in the stall.

Now I have to get a sponge and clean off my monitor. I never remember to put my drink down before reading a reply.
