And I have not seen any shift back to a pre-911 openness. So I feel that the university is no longer a space that is open to dissent. I should also add that the academic labor market is also in horrendous decline, with tenure becoming a thing of the past, and temp-like jobs becoming more and more the norm. H. This does not encourage fearless truth-telling.
I agree wholeheartedly.
In the comments section for Paul Krugman's op/ed piece yesterday the most recommended post was from an engineering professor who tells a similar story of the status of academia. He talks more about the plight of the student rather than the institution but to me it had about the same impact on me. It's well worth the read if you can access it.
It hurts me to recall the tragedy that befell the Dixie Chicks and I have always been proud of the way they stood up to the abuse they took. Reba McEntire was someone that upset me by her remarks but I was unaware of D. Sawyer's interview until now.
One day when the final story is written and it deconstructs the failure of the M$M, you will stand out as the pioneer who identified the absurdity and the self-enrichment of their actions, day after day.
Right now they are fighting back, tooth and nail, and if it weren't for the internet, I think they would be winning.
What you are writing makes so much sense, morally and ethically, it can't be stopped (unless the world is truly evil). But I am sure that Todd and Klein and Marcus and R. Cohen will locate every trick in the book to deter you. They have a lot of experience in lying.
I thoroughly enjoy your blog.

"This should not make a man who is a positive asset here a whipping boy or a pariah."-- Bill Owen
The last time Sinnard, and London Lad and Heru-ur forced Ondelette to leave UT caused me considerable concern. Their attacks seemed to me to be really 'beyond the pale.'
As though having a difference of opinion with the majority here should be a reason for ostrasizing a commenter.
I personally enjoy Ondelette's postings because they appear to be well-researched and not of the cuff as so many are.
I also believe he is a real positive asset to UT and would miss him. I encourage him to withstand the attacks and continue to post.
I find that commenters on this thread defending Peter Gailbraith's exploitation of the wars created by W. bush and maintained by Obama to be ingenuous.
It reminds me of the generals used by Fox as experts in which Fox didn't notify the viewers of the influence of the generals by the Pentagon.
If anybody doesn't discern the self-serving, self-interest, and dishonesty of Gailbraith they are indeed naive.
At least the NYT issued an corrective notification, which Fox never did, that I am aware of.
"Why pick on Fox?"
Because Fox declares that its presentation of the news is "fair and balanced" which it obviously isn't.
Even this two-faced, fork-tongued administration declared war on it.
I agree with you relative to Brian Williams, who annoys me no end but seems to me less outrageous (gut feeeling) than Fox Cable News.
Actually I don't trust any of the M$M. Fred Hiatt in particular from the Washington Post also stands out. But really I could go on and on. Just that Fox is the most egregious.
Crazy, I am probably a bit paranoid but I think most of the neocon, right-wing columnists are CIA agents
I am happy that there is a progressive group of bloggers like GG on the web that I can read. My source of news is not TV or the printed press at all, but the web.
The world series was wonderful!
Being that LL was one of the attackers of Ondelette and caused him to leave this thread for a while it is certainly enjoyable to watch him get lambasted this evening.
"It's going to be a great day when Bush, Cheney and company have their Nuremberg moment, won't it?"
— Pedinska
I don't think so!
Obama is just moving forward and those politicians guilty of heinous war crimes are not to be held accountable.
However anyone who abetted the Fort Hood terrorist will be dealt with severely, quickly, and effectively.
There you have it. Utter class partisan corruption maintained by the elite..
It's about time Glenn prevented you from participating in his blog. You sure have wasted many poster's time.
Bye, bye!
"Back in the real world, he's just a smarter Joe Lieberman".
— kovie
Normally I agreed with you. But I don't think you can even compare the two. Truly, I am massively disappointed in Obama, but Lieberman is plain crazy and self-centered.
Your post really clarified the discussion for me.
Thanks
'So we are basically at that point: for our elites, we refuse to punish Past Crimes on the ground that they occurred in the past -- for Muslim radicals, we're willing to punish them for Future Crimes'
