I for one am not opposed to "intense interrogation" but find the idea of torturing another human being repulsive to the nth degree. In my mind there is absolutely nothing as horrid as torture. Even if it produced "results" I would be against it.
I agree with Glenn that I have always wondered what the Vietnamese did to McCain that was universally acclaimed as torture by the MSM. For example, detainees under "intense interrogation" were subjected to deafening music, cold temperatures, walling, stress positions, sleep deprivation, etc. But I've never read that McCain was ever subjected to any of these torturing processes. What was done to him is at best vague, from what I read.
The Bushies are never going to be prosecuted for war crimes and I've concluded that they won't even be investigated. It is the way of life that I've come to accept. They rich elite establishment do not commit crimes. Only the poor go to prison!
And the people I know really don't care that the USA killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and tortured them with impunity in order to show its power or for oil, not for defense against a threat.
People are much more concerned about Lambert's sexuality and Chastity becoming a man.
Obama seems to enjoy compromising with anyone, anyone, because that's the kind of guy he is. To hell with doing what is right. Keep the rich elite happy!
Politics preempts morality!
Joan made a very poor decision to go on the show and severely paid the price.
It's a tough, almost impossible subject to debate but I think a strong case can be made not to abort in the last trimester; unless the fetus was caused by a rape or the mother's life is in danger. O'Reilly was on solid ground, knew it, and was prepared. He also knew he had control of the show. Sad to say, but Walsh came across as tepid and unsure of herself. Her point that it was legal was not convincing to me and I believe in a woman having control of her body and being able to abort for a reasonable amount of time.
Why would anyone wait until the last trimester?
I never watch Fox News, but O'Reilly made his points very well!
"Instead, they're basically persuing a cynical and opportunistic pro-establishment agenda both at home AND abroad.
Enough with carrots. We need sticks. Political sticks. And lots of them."
Kovie, I admire your belief that something can actually be done. But most people that I know, and from what I gather by reading the news really don't care. In fact, except for the diehard right-wingers, Obama is considered to be doing a very good job.
The upset people are mostly people like you writing in the blogs. And people like me who are still recoiling from the lies of the Obama administration and the disappointment of forsaken promises.
What is most disturbing is that I was convinced that Obama would rectify the inhuman war crimes committed by the Bushies, but he is dedicated to protecting the information about them. And he is keeping the wealthy, greedy elite that caused the economic crises in charge of resolving the problems while still making zillions.
Amazingly, the country has to go much further downhill before anyone uses "political sticks."
I am pretty sure that as you stated, there are going to be huge costs for the maintenance of 2 wars which don't seem to have any plausible reason and I feel that it is going to be a long time before the ecomomy is healthy. In fact I sense that Afghanistan is going to be the same type of hellhole for the USA as it was for the USSR.
But keep up the fight! I've been wrong so many times before. Especially relative to Obama.
"It's quite shameful, but they're politicians, and we shouldn't expect any more. So don't lose hope, just be patient, and do what you can to pressure them. This will turn around eventually, It has to."
But what if it doesn't? I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Human beings are capable of making huge mistakes. And it always seems to be "our best and brightest." There is really nothing saying that fair play and what is "right" is going to prevail. With the advent of the massive powers of the CIA and the other intelligence agencies, it seems plausible to me that a cabal of zealots in pursuit of global rule could overthrow the government. Especially when there is no transparency. It's been done before in the name of necessity, "so that we can protect our people from the enemy."
No where in history does it say the morally correct people always win out over the evil people.
Another huge disappointment for me are the politicians in congress. They are so into themselves and their egos that they are completely devoid of any sense of accountability or responsibility to their constituents.
Again Kovie, fight the good fight, but I don't feel I've ever seen the country in worse shape. People are just strolling down the street of plenty, ignoring what is going on and blindly following their leaders to somewhere. And I don't think that somewhere is going to be fun.
