Her new album is going to be called Rated R? This is the last straw. It's bad enough she makes money singing when she's a really poor singer; it's bad enough people think lyrics that SHE DIDN'T WRITE somehow describe her deepest darkest hopes and fears or whatever. But now she's going to steal the title of one of the best albums of the last 10 years, so that everytime I try to reference the Queens of the Stone Age album in casual conversation, people are going to think I'm talking about Rihanna? This aggression will not stand.
THIS AGGRESSION WILL NOT STAND.
I am really not a fan of her at all. First off, she dated Mr. Warner. Is there a reason to date an ugly, dubiously-talented, extremely poorly-aging rock star besides pissing off your dad? Probably not.
But more importantly, she always seems to be the weakest link in otherwise good movies. The Wrestler would be my first example of this phenomenon. I'm sure I could point to others, but that would require me to do research and I'm feeling too lazy for that right now.
Finally, I would encourage everyone to follow MEW's link to The Onion, which is the definitive Manson smackdown. Everything that needs to be said about him is said in that fine article, and I don't think it's necessary to add my two cents.
But one last thing: don't lump Manson in with Robert Smith. Robert Smith has at least three skills that Manson does not have--he can play an instrument, write songs, and sing. And the Cure have been a great live act for 20 years now.
You know, in all my years here (about 1, but hey, let's stick with "years"), I've never heard you say you support the troops. As such, I can only assume you hate them.
And GG, as a self-professed "civil liberties extremist," you should be ashamed by your hypocritcal bad-mouthing of extremists everywhere. Hehe.
I'll grant that Robert Smith's face has seen much better days. The rest of him too. He actually looks pretty hilarious. But it's not a big deal for me because I can't afford front row tickets to Cure shows. Sounds great from the back row!
And there's gotta be a couple aging goths in the world who never gave it up and never got fat. They're probably drug addicts though. It all evens out.
Remember Lieutenant General Boykin talks about the ongoing war on terror (or "overseas contingency operation," if you will) in terms of religion, saying the U.S. is a target because terrorists hate Christians and so forth. And of course there were Rumsfeld's reports with the "inspirational Bible verses" on the cover pages. The official line on the war is that it's not religiously-motivated (and many of us argue that an accurate understanding of what Jesus said makes "Christian war" a pretty stupid idea), but our military leaders continue to send mixed signals in that regard.
Hasan's acts must be condemned in no uncertain terms, but can you really blame him for seeing the war on terror as a war on Islam?
She put herself out there, she defined herself as some sort of moral role model to young Christians, after getting the pageant to pay for a boob job and aware that she had broken pageant rules (with those semi-nude pics). And she continues to talk about herself as some moral crusader. Well Christianity doesn't divide sin into "ones God really hates and ones He's pretty much ok with." The standard is holiness. Pre-marital sex gets you sent to hell just as quick as homosexual sex (taking the conservative interpretation here). And only grace saves you from hell. Which is why Christians who think about these things realize they're no better than anybody else and keep their mouths shut.
You insinuated that readers here don't care about mistreatment of prisoners / detainees in Iran because we weren't talking about it, which is rhetorically dishonest. To illustrate this fact, I applied the logic to you and called you an America-hater because you weren't talking about the troops. I don't know why I thought you might get the point.
Solutions? It's pretty much all Glenn ever talks about. Transparency and accountability. In the political process, the two go together, since the populace can't make informed decisions about whether to hold their representatives accountable without knowledge of what their representatives are doing. In the realm of political commentary, Glenn provides a service, namely a critique of well-known political commentators when they are inconsistent or hypocritical or compromised by a conflict of interest. Of course it is still the responsibility of the community at large to shun the criminals and hacks appropriately. That's where you take over.
Well I'm on record (somewhere) as not being a fan of Zacharek's at all. I don't think she's a good critic, I think she is offended by movies that fail to meet her own iconoclastic standards and needs to get her head out of her butt, etc. But I am a pretty big fan of Anderson so I'm interested to hear that she likes this movie.
But you know what? If you didn't like the movie "Up" I don't really know why I'm reading anything you have to say about movies. It's my favorite movie so far this year: beautiful, fun, funny, and moving. I can't think of a reason not to recommend it to the vast majority of people who would consider seeing it, aside from being a contrarian with your head....well, y
