So...wait. Ronald Reagan, the greatest president of any nation ever for all time, appointed terrorist sympathizers?! Oh noes! The mind boggles!
But seriously, folks, I heard this Obama guy wants is going to switch party affiliations from Democrat to Hamas the day after he wins the election, and will undoubtedly be wearing a bomb-vest as he takes the oath of office while placing his right hand on a copy of the Koran printed from the blood of infidels.
Get a grip already, Republicans. You can keep him from getting anything done for four years and run someone else against him. He's not a terrorist, he's not going to institute mandatory abortions for all, and the evil gays aren't going to take your children away and make them become gay too.
We've had a Republican president for the last eight years, and the country is screwed up. Any white Democrat running a halfway competent campaign would have been a shoo-in. Obama has run a fully competent campaign, and it looks like hes going to win. It is not the end of the world. The longest he can be president is eight years.
But by all means keep posting these wonderfully unhinged letters. The entertainment value is off the charts.
I dunno, maybe Francona knew it was gonna be a long game and both teams were going to be running low on pitchers near the end. I think Tampa Bay was down to their last. If I was the manager, (and I am in no way qualified) I would have tried to get one more inning out of Papelbon.
And let's remember that Sparky always had that one pitcher who never seemed to need to come out. How many complete games was Jack Morris throwing a season back then? I don't feel like looking it up, but I seem to remember it was a ridiculous number.
I have family, who I respect tremendously, who continue to be Pro-McCain for reasons I can't understand. My mom and dad even said they don't think of McCain or Palin as Christian, but apparently still think an Obama presidency would be a bad thing. I have explained to them how little the president can do to influence actual abortion policy, and even mentioned that abortions went down while Clinton was president and went back up again under Bush, but they remain unmoved. The biggest problem is really people who don't want to take the time to understand the issues. I am pretty demoralized, especially since they live in a swing state, but I'm not going to argue politics with family to the point of being contentious. It is just frustrating to see the poeple who taught me how to think for myself unwilling to do the same.
Autism is a developmental disorder which often does not manifest itself until a year or two into a child's life - a child appears to be developing normally, then begins to "regress" and develope symptoms of autism. It cannot be detected with prenatal testing, like Down's Syndrome can, and I am not sure if it can be detected at all as early as six months. I believe that the genetic causes of Down's Syndrome are understood, while the medical community is still tyring to figure Autism out. I wouldn't fault anyone without training or personal experience for not knowing the difference, although I agree that it seems like McCain should know the name of the much-publicized condition of his running mate's young child.
"Autism" covers a wide spectrum of disability. Some Autistics are quite high-functioning, and can function as adults with little or no support, while some need lifelong care. Most people have a pretty skewed view of autism because of movies like Rain Man, but in severe cases it can be a debilitating disorder.
I started reading his column through The Onion (which is a great place, of course), and he seems like a good guy. I disagree with his advice quite often, actually, being more of the monogamous and old-fashioned type, but he usually has a good point. And you know what? I would be pissed too if such a massive group of people made my personal life a political issue and talked about me like the end of civilization when I was just trying to live and be happy.
The Bible is a big old book. Try sitting down and reading it sometime, you'll hardly make a dent. And it mentions homosexuality a handful of times at the most. It talks about the evils of greed and oppression of the poor throughout, in almost every single book, but of course you'll never hear Christian leaders talking about that. Too many gays running around to even worry about social justice.
So, yeah, he's not running for office and he doesn't need to care if he pisses off Republicans with martyr complexes. Good for him if he pisses people off. Its not like he's advocating waterboarding presidential candidates or anything.
I gonna be a bit more unkind than normal, here.
Of course his endorsement means nothing to the people reading Salon, you idiots. The great majority of us are voting for Obama already. His endorsement WILL mean something to the moderate and right-wingers who still respect him, and if he does endorse Obama, don't look a gift horse in the motherfucking mouth. Will it make up for everything he's done in the past? Of course not, but it will finally be a public repudiation of Bush's policies, especially foreign, inasmuch as McCain parrots them, and that is a good thing.
