bearing in mind i have nothing against hunters in general and harvesting meat in particular...

1. *most* hunters are NOT the stereotype *most* people romanticize about: tracking elusive prey species through the field and forest, using nature's cues to outwit the wily turkey, etc... nope, your AVERAGE hunter spends THOUSANDS of dollars on guns, ammo, target practice, bait, clothes, gear, toys, ATV's, hunting cabins, etc, etc, etc, joins a hunt club (unless they are rich enough to own their own couple hundred acre tract), put out a bunch of feeders, plant bait fields, etc, *THEN* they sit halfway up a tree in a deer stand, hitting the bottle and such, waiting for a deer to stroll by and take the bait so they can blow it away...

not really the primal hunting experience many might picture... (or generally shown on hunting shows)

2. the other common alternative is that of the 'trophy' hunter who books a multi-thousand dollar hunting trip with guides, etc...

again, the actual meat eventually harvested can EASILY be 'worth' hundreds of dollars a pound... VERY similar to fisherman who spend THOUSANDS on bass boats, trailers, tackle, etc, etc, etc, and get 10 pounds of fish for their trouble and expense at a thousand dollars a pound...

(YES, i definitely realize that the 'value' of the outdoor experience, etc, is a large part of why fisherman fish and hunters hunt; i'm just saying it is -more often than not- NOT a 'cheap' means of harvesting meat for the AVERAGE hunter...)

3. as far as 'economical' alternative, that ONLY has meaning for the homesteader with the gun handed down from granddad, *AND* (as pointed out by another poster) they live in a rural-ish (doesn't have to be too rural for deer) area where they can step outside their backdoor and shoot an inattentive ungulate... even then, they have to have a license, either butcher the deer themselves, OR (as many do) pay a butcher to prepare the meat, grind it, etc...) not to mention freezer storage, etc...

4.not that factory farmed animals don't have myriads of problematic 'supplements', etc which are pumped into them, but 'wild' animals such as deer also have some problems, including a 'mad cow' type of wasting disease...
