But why?

I can't for the life of me think of a valid reason why *reporters* would participate in a session with the president and agree to non-disclosure. Isn't it their *job* to report on what they learn? What content would fall under such an agreement, national secrets? Without proper security clearance? It appears that at least one news source is seeing through such a farce.

Green stealing votes

Obviously the Republicans are trying to steal the election by encouraging a third party that would likely take votes away from their opposition. I often wonder how much Ralph Nader gained from his run.

Of course this would not be an issue if we actually implemented instant-runoff voting in this country...

CofCC

The link that you mention to the manifest of the "Council of Concerned Citizens" is actually for the "Council of Conservative Citizens". I don't know if you got the name wrong or the link...

Spreading like wildfire

At lunchtime I heard this broadcast as "news" on the Boston CBS AM radio station, and I nearly crashed my car when I heard those inevitable words "sources said"...

Original article: Who needs a Prius anyway?

Prius is the way to go

I've had a Prius for over a year and a half now. I get 50 mpg on average by just avoiding highways and taking shorter back road routes (45-50 mph seems to be optimal). So I get roughly twice the mpg of my previous car, which was a 4-cylinder Camry with manual transmission, which averaged around 27 mpg. The Prius has a huge amount of room compared to anything else in its gas mileage class, and I've never had anything but compliments on the rear seat space.

Be careful with roof racks on any of these vehicles, though, as the aerodynamics are a key component of the gas mileage. Adding extra clutter to the roof will seriously affect your gas mileage.

Original article: The GOP's loyalty oath

14th Amendment, anyone?

"No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States". Seems like taking an oath regarding future voting is more that a little restrictive to me...

Drudging

Funny that the Clinton campaign comment stated "False reports about voting problems in LA are being drudged up"... Slight irony or just the wrong word?

Let's look inside Diebold's machines

I have to agree with John762 - allowing the company to be taken over will most likely open up its operation to unwanted scrutiny. I'd bet that even if the takeover bid were to be pushed forward that it would end up being blocked by any Republican-controlled government agencies that would have to approve. "You can't allow Diebold to be bought, that would be a threat to democracy and national security!"

Maybe it's an advantage to her

One possible reason Silda and Hillary stood by their husbands was to remain identified with them, even as they wish to distinguish themselves from them.

Both women will invariably be remembered in some way *because* of the transgressions of their spouses. People will remember their stoicism and assume they were strong, capable women, so that later, when they are trying to accomplish things on their own, they will noted for that.

As Hillary is not generally dinged for Bill's mistakes, neither will Silda, but after this recent episode her name will be known by many more people.

Science and Whoville

Interesting that you note the abundance of science in the movie (I have not yet seen it, though I think I'll look forward to it more now). I just heard on NPR today that pro-lifers are trying to use the "a person's a person, no matter how small" line as evidence for their cause. I think I just seriously hurt myself rolling my eyes...

Original article: Beware the ninja Prius

Shhh, I don't hear a Prius

There are far more bicyclists on the roads than Priuses, and I've seen more close calls when someone steps into the street in front of a bike than in front of a Prius, yet no one is demanding that all bicycles on the road make more noise.

And of course when pressed, the proponents of laws to turn up the Prius' volume are not able to point to a single incident that was caused by a Prius' silent running.

I like driving my Prius in stealth mode, and I just know that I have to be more aware. I don't need no stinking cow bells.

Evening News

Glenn, you comment on the decline of the viewership of the evening news broadcasts. Perhaps it has to do with the decline of the evening news content. About 25% is commercials, 25% seems to be nothing but blurbs for upcoming segments, and 25% is fluff. Compare that to when Walter Cronkite and anchors of his day read the actual news reports. Even aside from making news of trivial issues like lapel pins, today's "news" program is so bloated with special effect graphics and swooshing sounds and sensationalism that there's hardly room left for the news.

The People's Business

The NY Times article on this says: "But the panel’s top Republican, Representative Lamar Smith of Texas, accused Democrats of conducting “witch hunts” and neglecting the people’s real business, like energy needs and border security." Heh heh, isn't that type of neglecting exactly what Republicans were doing while impeaching Clinton for a measly blow job?

Original article: McCain's flailing panic

Debate help

I think McCain is scared he just won't be able to stand up to Obama in the debate, so he was looking for excuses to get out of it. So he grandstands and makes a big show out of the "more important things to do" argument. Only under pressure of having the green curtain pulled aside is he now reluctantly agreeing to attend.

Also, everyone should remember to look for bulges under McCain's jacket to see if he's wearing some sort of receiver in order to get advice during the debate from his advisors...
